Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia: The Hottest Destinations for Aussie Travellers

Japan
Australians are travelling overseas in record numbers, and the latest trends reveal that Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia are topping the charts as the fastest-growing destinations. With their unique cultural offerings, breathtaking landscapes, and unmatched experiences, these countries are becoming must-visit hotspots for Australian adventurers.

Australians on the Move

The Australian Travel Industry Association’s (ATIA) December Travel Trends report paints a vivid picture of our nation’s wanderlust. Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Department of Infrastructure, the report highlights a staggering 1.66 million Australians departing for international destinations in October alone—a 12.1% increase compared to the same month last year.

Leading the surge is Japan, which has seen a phenomenal 73.8% year-on-year growth, with 567,330 Australians travelling there as of October 2024. Vietnam follows with a 35.4% increase, while Indonesia, including the ever-popular Bali, boasts a 26% rise in Aussie visitors.

Why the Growth?

Leisure Travel at an All-Time High

With 63.6% of Australians travelling for holidays, the leisure sector is driving this surge. Destinations like Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia offer a mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion that resonates with Aussie travellers.

Reconnecting with Loved Ones

A significant 24% of travellers are venturing abroad to reunite with family and friends. Southeast Asia and East Asia’s proximity and affordability make them ideal for such personal trips.

Emerging Market Appeal

“Destinations like Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia are seeing unprecedented growth,” says Richard Taylor, ATIA’s Director of Membership and Industry Affairs. “Australians’ appetite for emerging markets is stronger than ever.”

The Stars of the Show

Japan

The Land of the Rising Sun has become a magnet for Aussie travellers, thanks to its blend of tradition and modernity. With 73.8% growth, Japan’s allure lies in its vibrant cities, snow-capped peaks, and iconic cultural festivals. From the ski slopes of Hokkaido to the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, the country caters to a diverse range of interests.

Vietnam

Vietnam offers an enchanting mix of ancient history, lush landscapes, and world-famous cuisine. A 35.4% increase in Australian visitors highlights its growing popularity as an affordable yet richly rewarding destination. Explore bustling markets in Hanoi, cruise the emerald waters of Halong Bay, or unwind on the pristine beaches of Da Nang.

Indonesia

Long a favourite for its tropical beaches, Indonesia continues to charm Aussies, with 1.64 million visitors recorded in the past year. Bali remains the jewel in its crown, but many travellers are venturing further afield to islands like Lombok, Nusa Penida, and Java for fresh adventures.
