A Historic Beginning
Originally called the Colombo Museum, it was the vision of Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at the time. The idea of establishing a public museum was brought to his attention by the Royal Asiatic Society (CB) after his appointment as governor in 1872. Despite facing several challenges, Gregory succeeded in obtaining approval from the Legislative Council, which paved the way for the museum’s creation.
Designed by architect J.G. Smither in an Italian architectural style, the museum’s construction was completed in 1876. The following year, it opened its doors to the public, with the aim of preserving and showcasing the island’s natural and cultural heritage.
Expanding the Museum’s Reach
Over the years, the Colombo National Museum has grown into a national treasure, thanks to the efforts of many key figures, including Dr. P.E.P. Deraniyagala, who played a significant role in expanding its reach during his tenure. Dr. Deraniyagala’s leadership saw the opening of branch museums in Jaffna, Kandy, and Ratnapura, and in 1942, the Department of National Museums was formally established under Act No. 31.
Today, the Colombo National Museum has expanded its scope even further, with a total of nine branch museums scattered across the island.
