A Deeper Dive into Peru’s Rich Heritage
According to the Australian Museum’s Director and CEO, Kim McKay AO, these events are designed to enhance the exhibition experience by exploring the culture, beliefs, and achievements of Peru’s ancient empires.
“Through this rich series of talks and experiences, visitors will be able to delve deeper into the stories behind the artifacts and uncover the broader cultural significance of ancient Andean civilizations,” McKay said.
Here’s a look at the standout events in the Journey to Peru series:
1. Conversations of the Golden Empires: From the Andes to the Amazon
Take a journey through thousands of years of history with leading experts in Peruvian archaeology, spirituality, and ancient achievements. Dr. Chris Carter, Professor Julian Droogan, and journalist Caroline Baum will guide attendees through the stories of Peru’s majestic civilizations.

2. Conversations of the Golden Empires: Modern Discoveries of an Ancient Land
Discover the intricate connections between Peru’s biodiversity and its ancient cultures. Hosted by ABC Radio National’s Natasha Mitchell, this engaging discussion features Prof. Kris Helgen and Dr. Jacob Bongers, who will uncover the role of Peru’s environment in shaping its civilizations.

3. Peru’sing the Menu: A Brief History of Ceviche
Food lovers will delight in this culinary journey led by award-winning Executive Chef Alejandro Saravia of Morena. Learn the history of Peru’s iconic dish, ceviche, while sipping on pisco sours and sampling Peruvian canapés. This exclusive evening also includes a guided tour of the exhibition with Dr. Jacob Bongers.

4. Peruvian Nights at the Museum
Experience the magic of ancient Peru after dark during the Sydney Festival. Every Wednesday evening in January, the museum will stay open late, featuring live Peruvian music, a pop-up bar serving Peruvian-inspired snacks, and exclusive access to the exhibition.Enjoy performances by Peruvian musicians Duo Jimenez and Afro-Peruvian ensemble ALLY featuring Giorgio Rojas.

The Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibition features awe-inspiring treasures from ancient Andean civilizations, including gold artifacts and an immersive VR experience that transports visitors to the iconic citadel of Machu Picchu.
