Always popular with children, the 2013 program features well-known international and Australian acts, as well as many community dance and performance groups from Western Sydney. Parramasala Artistic Director, David Malacari said the event offers a great opportunity to discover different cultural experiences through a number of exciting, interactive activities.
“There is something for everyone at Parramasala, from renowned world music artists to free outdoor entertainment. We invite all families to take a cultural journey to enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas of Asia.
“Prince Alfred Park will play host to a giant paint-by-numbers, story readings, performance groups, dancing and so much more throughout the long weekend. Parents are invited to bring down a picnic blanket and soak up the atmosphere while the kids embrace the activities, enjoy an ice-cream and run around the spacious park,” said Malacari.
Parramasala 2013 will kick off with a spectacular parade of people, floats and animals in a colourful, noisy extravaganza. Individuals and groups from all over the world, including Lebanese drummers, a Uruguayan Candombe, the Bollywood Dance Group and a Dragon and Lion Dance, will showcase the diverse talents of Western Sydney in a giant community street party.
“This is a fantastic way for Sydneysiders to experience and celebrate the different cultures from all around the world that call Western Sydney home. From storytelling and face painting for the toddlers to camel rides for the teens and adults, everyone will get something out of program,” said Malacari.
Every budding gymnast and avid tree climber will love the Mallakhamb Acrobats. These elite athletes from Mumbai present a jaw-dropping display of strength, agility and flexibility as they perform gravity-defying poses on a wooden pole.
Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee said: “The 2013 Parramasala program includes exciting performances from some of the world’s best artists who are coming to Western Sydney to delight audiences with an extraordinary range of free and ticketed events for the whole family.”
Throughout the festival the Masala Markets will host more than 40 outdoor stalls in the Prince Alfred Park with an enticing range of authentic culinary delights. There will also be traditional art forms to enjoy from henna hand painting to stalls displaying colourful fabrics, arts, crafts and refreshments for purchase.
Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid said: “The 2013 program is filled with a huge variety of contemporary and traditional performances spanning a variety of genres and cultures. It shows that you don’t have to travel to the City for rich artistic and cultural experiences,” Cr Chedid said.
Parramasala is funded by Destination NSW and Parramatta City Council and is a key arts and cultural event on the NSW Events Calendar.
