Floriade opened in Canberra on Saturday, drawing thousands of visitors and providing a welcome boost to the local visitor economy, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).
Floriade, the festival of spring, will be held in Commonwealth Park, Canberra from 14 September until 13 October.
TTF Executive Director Adele Labine-Romain said Floriade is a stand out on the Australian Capital Territory’s events calendar.
“Government investment and support in events like Floriade delivers significant benefits to the territory, giving people a reason to visit the ACT in spring,” said Ms Labine-Romain.
“Major events support Canberra’s economy across numerous sectors, including accommodation, transport, entertainment and dining.
“TTF’s National Tourism Business Count & Employment Atlas reveals that the visitor economy supports 3,625 ACT businesses and employs 8,400 people.
“Events that are properly planned, promoted and managed are a vital element of the ACT’s tourism offering, boosting overall tourism activity and attracting private investment in complementary attractions.
“Industry is expecting another great year for Floriade off the back of a record breaking 2012.
“More than 442,243 visitors attended Floriade last year and the event recorded its highest ever attendance for a single day with 35,200 visitors.
“Floriade creates interest and awareness of the ACT as a tourism destination, broadening its tourism offering and helping to highlight the variety of activities available to visitors.
“Australian Capital Tourism and the ACT government should be congratulated on their commitment to this iconic event.”
