The Phantom of the Opera Enchants Mumbai in a Historic First

The Phantom of the Opera
A Landmark Cultural Moment for India

For the first time in its illustrious history, the legendary musical The Phantom of the Opera has arrived in India, captivating audiences at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai. Since its 1986 London debut, this masterpiece has enthralled over 160 million people in 195 cities and 21 languages. Now, Mumbai joins the long list of cities touched by its magic, with performances running until 30 March.

An Opening Night to Remember

On 5 March, Mrs Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of the NMACC, and Lady Madeleine Lloyd Webber took to the stage before a sold-out audience to mark both the production’s Indian debut and the Cultural Centre’s second anniversary. The evening was a celebration of theatre’s power to transcend borders, as the haunting score and breathtaking staging brought the Phantom’s story to life for an Indian audience for the very first time.

Bridging Cultures Through Theatre

Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and the British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, highlighted the significance of this cultural milestone. He noted that London’s West End is the most vibrant theatre hub in the world, attracting a quarter of international visitors to its shows. Bringing one of the West End’s crown jewels to Mumbai reflects a growing exchange between UK and Indian arts, made possible by a booming middle class eager for world-class entertainment.

A Global Phenomenon Arrives in India

With a history spanning nearly four decades, The Phantom of the Opera has been performed in 40 countries and 183 cities worldwide, winning hearts with its unforgettable score and dazzling stagecraft. The Mumbai run is co-produced by Crossroads Live, whose team, including CEO of Crossroads Live North America Angela Rowles, UK and Group International Touring Executive Producer Lisa Fleming, and Executive Producer Kori Prior, attended opening night to celebrate the occasion.

Curtain Up on a Phantastic Run
