The Rise of Rail Tourism in Southeast Asia

Rail tourism is rapidly transforming the way travellers experience the Greater Mekong Subregion. With new cross-border routes and regional partnerships, journeys across Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and beyond are becoming easier, faster, and more sustainable. The shift from traditional air and road travel to rail is not only opening up secondary destinations but also shaping the Mekong into one of Asia’s most dynamic hubs for cultural discovery and eco-friendly tourism.

The Success of the China–Laos Railway

Since opening in 2021, the China–Laos Railway has become a game-changer for travel in Southeast Asia. More than 48.6 million passenger trips have already been recorded, connecting international visitors to destinations such as Luang Prabang and Vientiane. This vital route has sparked a surge in multi-country journeys, making Laos a key gateway to the wider region. Travellers now enjoy seamless access to World Heritage towns, bustling capitals, and emerging cultural hotspots.

Thailand and Laos Strengthen Rail Ties

In February 2025, a landmark cooperation pact was signed between Lao and Thai rail operators to boost services on the Bangkok–Vientiane line. The route proved an instant success, attracting nearly 289,000 passengers in just seven months. With improvements underway, the line promises smoother cross-border journeys, allowing travellers to combine Thailand’s vibrant cities with the charm of Lao heritage destinations.

High-Speed Rail Projects on the Horizon

Thailand is pressing ahead with the second phase of its ambitious high-speed railway project, scheduled for completion in 2032. This new line will connect Bangkok directly with the China–Laos Railway, creating a powerful transport corridor across mainland Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Vietnam is moving forward with plans for a line linking Hai Phong through Hanoi to Lao Cai, while Cambodia has announced high-speed rail development by 2033 that will link the kingdom with its neighbours. These future projects will further knit the Mekong region together, expanding options for travellers seeking multi-country adventures.

Sustainable Travel for the Future

Rail travel in the Mekong offers more than convenience. It distributes tourism beyond major cities, supports local communities, and provides a lower-carbon alternative to flying or long road journeys. For travellers, it means discovering off-the-beaten-path towns, authentic cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes from the comfort of a train carriage. With expanding rail networks, the Mekong is positioning itself as a model for sustainable tourism in Asia.

Planning Your Rail Journey Through the Mekong

As rail routes continue to expand, travellers can look forward to increasingly seamless itineraries linking multiple countries. Whether riding the China–Laos line into the heart of Luang Prabang, journeying across the Bangkok–Vientiane route, or planning ahead for future connections in Vietnam and Cambodia, the Mekong rail experience promises to be one of the most exciting ways to explore Southeast Asia in the coming decade.
