The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), aims to elevate Thailand’s tourism offerings by focusing not just on quantity, but also on the quality of the visitors it attracts. Following a strong performance in 2024, where the country saw a revenue of 2.6 trillion baht, the goal is to push beyond the previous record and reach new heights despite challenges from global economic fluctuations and intensified competition from neighboring countries.
Sarawong Thianthong, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, emphasized that the new target of 40 million foreign visitors represents a 1 million increase from the previous year. This goal, while ambitious, reflects Thailand’s determination to remain a dominant force in global tourism, despite a competitive landscape shaped by strengthening currency values and other regional destinations offering enticing visa incentives.
Recognizing these challenges, TAT governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool outlined strategies to help achieve the campaign’s targets. The authority’s approach includes a strategic shift towards attracting higher-value tourists, focusing on luxury travel experiences, and tapping into niche markets. Additionally, expanding into new markets across Europe, the Americas, and emerging regions will be key to diversifying Thailand’s tourism appeal.
Among the key elements of the campaign is the enhancement of the overall travel experience. TAT has committed to introducing new travel routes, exclusive travel packages, and ensuring greater ease of travel with seamless payment systems and improved connectivity. Furthermore, the global promotion of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, exceptional cuisine, and famed hospitality will play a vital role in attracting visitors.
The "Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism & Sports Year 2025" campaign is built upon five key pillars, each designed to elevate Thailand’s tourism experience and draw tourists from all over the world:
Grand Festivity: The country will host large-scale events and festivals, which will serve as magnets for tourists and create a vibrant atmosphere throughout the year.
Grand Moment: Exclusive and one-of-a-kind travel experiences will be offered, enabling visitors to connect with Thailand in ways that go beyond the typical tourist experience.
Grand Privilege: Special promotions, including discounts on shopping, flights, and tours, will be available to incentivize travel and enhance the overall tourist experience.
Grand Invitation: International stars and influencers will be invited to explore Thailand, sharing their experiences with the world and further enhancing the destination’s appeal.
Grand Celebration: The year will also focus on celebrating Thailand’s unique festivals, fostering stronger diplomatic ties, and recognizing achievements across various sectors, thereby enriching the cultural fabric of the country.
Additionally, the campaign will place a strong emphasis on sustainable tourism practices, with the introduction of initiatives such as the Sustainable Tourism Goal (STAR) project. This project aims to minimize environmental impacts while promoting responsible tourism practices that benefit both visitors and the local communities.
Domestic travel is also a significant component of the plan. The TAT will push for increased development of key tourism destinations, and initiatives like the "We Travel Together" project will encourage Thai residents to explore their own country. This, combined with increased airline routes and flight frequencies to Thailand, will make the country even more accessible to international travelers.
Looking ahead, Thapanee Kiatphaibool notes that 2025 is a pivotal year for Thai tourism. “Our goal is not just to increase the number of visitors but to elevate the quality of the tourism experience,” she stated. The focus is on attracting higher-spending travelers while diversifying the markets from which they come, ensuring that Thailand remains a desirable destination for years to come.
In addition, the Thai government has reintroduced the "Easy e-Receipt 2025" initiative, which will allow travelers to receive tax deductions on purchases made from registered businesses, further enhancing the appeal of Thailand as a top shopping and tourism hub.
As Thailand embarks on its Grand Tourism & Sports Year, the campaign represents more than just a marketing initiative—it is a comprehensive strategy to position the country as a world-class destination that offers rich cultural experiences, luxurious getaways, and a sustainable future for tourism. With these ambitious goals, Thailand is poised to continue attracting millions of travelers, strengthening its place as one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations.
