As the closest Chinese provincial capital to ASEAN countries, Nanning has long been positioned as a crucial bridge for facilitating exchanges between China and its southern neighbors. Known as the permanent host city of the China-ASEAN Expo, Nanning’s strategic location has allowed it to play a pivotal role in regional openness and cooperation.
In recent years, Nanning has emerged as a significant tourism hub, welcoming travelers from both China and ASEAN destinations. The city’s tourism offerings are as diverse as its cultural heritage, with a vision of becoming an international metropolis that embraces both local and international travelers. This shift has been especially evident with the rising influx of visitors from ASEAN countries, all eager to experience the unique blend of southern Chinese culture and its burgeoning tourism scene.
According to the latest statistics, Nanning saw a 122.06 percent year-on-year increase in inbound overnight visitors from January to November 2024, with over half of these travelers coming from ASEAN countries. This rise in tourism has been bolstered by the recent introduction of a 240-hour transit visa-free policy, which allows international travelers more flexibility and easier access to the city, signaling a promising future for Nanning’s tourism industry.
As part of its broader strategy, Nanning’s cultural and tourism authorities have implemented the "going abroad" and "inviting in" strategies, which have already shown great success. In 2024, over 700 travel professionals from ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia, visited Nanning to explore potential collaboration in the tourism sector. These efforts are reflective of the city's ongoing commitment to strengthening its international presence and fostering cultural exchange.
Nanning's tourism scene isn't limited to just inbound travel, as it has become a critical destination for outbound tourism to ASEAN countries. With all ASEAN capital cities within a four-hour flight from Nanning, the city is a perfect hub for tourists seeking to explore the region. In 2024, Nanning Wuxu International Airport expanded its reach, launching new routes to destinations like Haiphong, Vietnam, and resuming 19 international routes, connecting Nanning to major cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City. These developments have further solidified Nanning’s status as a key gateway for travelers heading to ASEAN.
In addition to bolstering tourism, Nanning has become a cultural hotspot. The city hosted a variety of high-profile cultural events in 2024, including the Melody of Spring transnational Spring Festival Gala, the China-ASEAN Film Festival, and the China-ASEAN (Nanning) Theater Week. These events not only showcased the city’s rich cultural heritage but also served as a platform for fostering deeper cultural understanding and tourism collaboration between China and ASEAN nations.
Nanning’s commitment to regional cooperation is also reflected in its growing network of sister-city partnerships. The city has established relationships with 10 ASEAN cities, such as Bac Giang in Vietnam and Ipoh in Malaysia. The presence of consulates from six ASEAN countries—Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Malaysia—further strengthens Nanning’s position as a central hub for tourism and cultural exchange.
As Nanning continues to grow and evolve, it is well on its way to becoming a cornerstone in China-ASEAN tourism ties. The city’s strategic location, robust transportation infrastructure, and proactive approach to fostering international tourism partnerships position it as a crucial gateway for travelers exploring both China and ASEAN countries. With the "Global Mayors Dialogue - Nanning" event set to take place in January, Nanning is poised to further cement its role as a central player in strengthening tourism and cultural ties between China and ASEAN.
