TAT Supports Zeekr’s EV Caravan Journey to Thailand: A Milestone in Sustainable Tourism and Thailand-China Relations

EV caravan
In an exciting development for both sustainable tourism and cross-border collaboration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is proud to support Zeekr’s groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) caravan, a journey that highlights Thailand’s commitment to eco-friendly tourism and strengthens its growing ties with China. This innovative initiative marks a significant milestone as Thailand and China prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2025.

Zeekr, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, embarked on its EV caravan in late November 2024. The caravan, consisting of 12 state-of-the-art electric vehicles and 48 participants, began its journey in China, traversing Laos before crossing into Thailand on November 26. The caravan’s destination is the 41st Thailand International Motor Expo, taking place from November 29 to December 10, 2024, at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. There, Zeekr will showcase its cutting-edge EV technology and highlight the growing importance of electric mobility in the region.

A Warm Welcome to Thailand

Upon arrival in Thailand, the caravan was officially welcomed in Nong Khai Province by Mr. Rattasart Chitchoo, Deputy Governor of Nong Khai, in a reception hosted by TAT. The event, attended by local officials and representatives from various sectors, highlighted Thailand’s commitment to maintaining high safety and service standards for international visitors. The reception also underscored the country’s eagerness to embrace sustainable tourism practices while fostering stronger international relationships.

“This event is a clear example of TAT’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism and position Thailand as a leader in eco-friendly travel,” said Ms. Tharinee Somboon, TAT Deputy Director for the East Asia Region. “By supporting this pioneering EV caravan, we aim to not only promote environmentally responsible travel but also showcase Thailand’s growing role in the sustainable tourism sector.”

Highlighting Cross-Border Travel and EV Tourism

The caravan's journey through Thailand includes visits to key provinces such as Nong Khai, Udon Thani, and Pattaya. These destinations are part of TAT’s broader strategy to expand the reach of Thailand’s tourism offerings in the eastern regions of China, particularly among environmentally conscious travellers. The route also shines a spotlight on Thailand’s potential as a hub for electric vehicle tourism—a rapidly growing sector in Southeast Asia.

As the caravan makes its way through the region, it offers an opportunity to promote Thailand’s natural beauty and diverse attractions while reinforcing the importance of sustainable travel. By showcasing the EV caravan’s journey, TAT hopes to raise awareness of Thailand as an eco-friendly destination, attracting like-minded travellers who value both adventure and environmental responsibility.

Strengthening Thailand-China Tourism Ties

Beyond its environmental impact, the arrival of the Zeekr caravan is poised to have a significant influence on the growing Chinese tourist market. With over 6 million Chinese tourists visiting Thailand between January and November 2024, China has become Thailand’s largest source of international visitors. Chinese travellers are particularly drawn to Thailand’s renowned hospitality, stunning landscapes, and rich culinary heritage—elements that the caravan’s route is set to highlight.

The collaboration with Zeekr also offers an exciting opportunity to further enhance Thailand’s visibility in China. The exposure generated by the EV caravan is expected to reach over 100 million people across both countries, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a premier travel destination. The project will also spotlight the scenic attractions along the caravan’s route, boosting recognition of Thailand’s lesser-known gems among Chinese tourists.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Sustainable Tourism

The Zeekr EV caravan journey is not just a one-time event but part of a larger vision for sustainable, cross-border tourism. With eco-friendly travel becoming an increasing priority for travellers around the world, TAT is positioning Thailand as a key player in the growing market for green tourism. This collaboration with Zeekr serves as a testament to the country’s dedication to promoting responsible travel practices while continuing to nurture valuable diplomatic and cultural ties with China.

As Thailand and China prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, initiatives like the Zeekr EV caravan will continue to play an important role in fostering understanding and cooperation between the two nations—while also paving the way for a more sustainable and connected future in tourism.

For travellers and enthusiasts of eco-tourism, the Zeekr EV caravan offers a unique and exciting glimpse into the future of sustainable cross-border travel, while also reaffirming Thailand’s role as a leader in green tourism in Southeast Asia.
