Fun-loving frolickers and lascivious lovers will immerse themselves in a night-time world of wonder in Kensington Street from dusk until late on Saturday 17 September. With 35 eateries and bars, expect an ostentatious night of art, culture, risk, food, eroticism, flowing drinks and dancing.
Since its opening in 2015, Kensington Street has become the bold new must-visit lifestyle precinct for restaurants, cafes, markets, artists, galleries, innovative retailers, and creatives in Sydney’s new downtown.
With support from the City of Sydney’s precinct grants, Sydney Fringe Festival and Kensington Street will turn the pedestrianised precinct in Chippendale will descend into decadence as it transforms into the wicked and wondrous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, complete with lush green columns adorned with twisted vines and intertwining shrubs. Sensuous creatures will roam the street while visitors are hypnotised by the Fire-tree; a totem of dangerous beauty forged in metal and fire, burning bright and wild.
“I am thrilled to partner with our long term creative partners Sydney Fringe and The City of Sydney to bring a little of what Sydney’s been missing back to the streets of our city. Over the last ten years, we have worked tirelessly to create a community and facilitate creativity within Chippendale. The grants provided by the City of Sydney have been instrumental in keeping our spirits and neighborhoods active over the last few years and we are thrilled to be the first to showcase what precinct grants can offer communities, businesses, and our creatives” Chairman of Kensington Street Holdings, Dr Stanley Quek.
Indulge your appetite at Spice Alley, the urban alleyway concealed behind a red gate, with exotic Asian street-food eateries under a vibrant canopy of yellow lanterns. Or dine after dark with two delectable options – take a seat at Olio Terrace, where you’ll delight in four courses of Sicilian cuisine as your eyes feast on the bustling street below, or enjoy a five-course meal from the combined talents of four different Kensington Street restauranteurs; Olio, Gavroche, Eastside Bar and Grill, and Mekong.
You’re only as strong as the cocktails you drink and the tables you dance on, so gain your liquid courage from our 10+ bars including Gin Lane, Cartel, Blossom Bar and more.
It won’t cost you a thing to let your inner wild child out – revel in artistic self-expression with the multitude of dance parties and DJs playing, or happen upon an array of roving performers and entertainment, curated by Sydney's provocateur, Porcelain Alice. Expect erotic woodland nymphs, spinners of blood-red fairy floss for you to devour, The Bubble Goddess with her spheres of ethereal beauty, a Babylonian flash mob, a mystical Tarot reader, artists of the fire hula hoop, stilt walkers, fire breathers, the Formidable Champagne Twins, and other-worldly contortionists.
RSVP here for a free night out like no other, when Sydney Fringe channels the ancient energies of Mesopotamia to transform Kensington Street into Babylon for a celebration of uninhibited nature, lavishness, excess, and wanton revelry.
