“Japan has long been one of Australia’s much loved destinations, and after over two years of strict travel restrictions, we expect the much anticipated news of Japan’s restrictions easing will be welcomed by Aussie travellers. Travel restrictions easing are a key step towards fully unlocking traveller demand and as we’ve seen in other countries, once restrictions are eased further, intent to travel turns into bookings. Clear, consistent information about the latest changes and travel requirements are key to rebuilding traveller confidence.

“Following the news in August that Japan was scrapping PCT testing restrictions, Skyscanner saw a 27% week on week increase in searches from Australia and we’d expect to see this number grow now that restrictions for individual travellers have eased further and Japan’s daily tourist cap has increased significantly tbc.

“In our latest traveller sentiment survey, 39% Australians* said they are looking for new cultural experiences from their next trip, and what better place than Japan to explore a truly unique culture. The reopening comes at the perfect time for Aussies looking to get back to a much loved destination and plan seasonal ski holidays to Niseko, Hakuba or Nozawaonsen with peak ski season between December to April.

“Travellers looking to plan travel to Japan will need to ensure they follow local Covid measures. Be sure to stock up on face masks, as there is an expectation these are to be worn, particularly in airports and crowded spaces. Social distancing is commonplace too, and expected where possible, including in restaurants, popular tourist attractions, and on public transport.

“Skyscanner is on hand to help Australians get back to overseas travel again with a dedicated Covid travel advice hub with the latest advice and travel tips. Setting up price alerts is also a great way of keeping an eye on prices to your favourite destinations. If you aren’t tied to certain dates, Skyscanner’s handy ‘Cheapest Month’ search tool is an easy way to find the compare the best fares at a glance.”
