Geography
Approximately 40km from the Gulf of Thailand on the delta of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok may seem like an exceedingly large and complicated city to navigate – but it is much easier than you think. The Chao Phraya River is the city’s main geographical feature, dividing the city into two formal municipalities. Along the banks of the river, you will see ancient monuments reflecting the people’s beliefs, religion, and monarchs. To the north and east, you will find the more urbanized city center, filled with skyscrapers, highways, and shopping centers; on the south, the nearby areas of Thonburi and Khlong San.
Bangkok can be generally divided into six main tourist areas:
- Sukhumvit: This is the longest road in Thailand known for its modern tourist hotspots from restaurants and bars to shopping malls and hotels. The red-light district can also be found on Sukhumvit’s many side streets that stretch and interconnect the rest of the city with this main highway.
- Siam: The city’s main shopping hub is Siam, and is littered with some of the biggest and most popular malls in the country. Crowds of tourists and locals can always be found in this trendy area.
- Silom: By day, Silom is a bustling business center known for its financial institutions and corporate offices. By night, this place transforms into a lively arena known for its bright nightlife and fine restaurants.
- Khao San and the Old City: The Old City is home to most of the historical Bangkok tourist attractions (such as Wat Pho, The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, etc.). It also houses Khao San Road which is also known as the center of the backpacker universe for its budget hotels, cheap street food, and infectious atmosphere.
- Chinatown: Always busy, this area is packed with market stalls, mini shrines, restaurants, and gold shops. The best time to experience this is during Chinese New Year and the Vegetarian Festival in October. However, it’s always wise to check the Thailand holidays before going.
- The Riverside: Charming in an almost untouched way, Bangkok’s riverside is a reflection of the country’s historic roots, with historical landmarks, bright Bangkok palaces and temples, and ferries that take you across the river and back.
