Do you dare venture into the 'Seven Hells of Beppu'?

Beppu, Oita Prefecture
Once believed to be cursed because of the water and gas that bubbled up violently from the land, these seven unique hot springs in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, continue to intrigue visitors today.

Water temperatures can reach 100°C, so they are purely for viewing!

The largest of the hells is Umi (Sea) Jigoku, which is a stunning cobalt blue and the water gushes up from a spring 200 metres below the ground.

The oldest is Chinoike Jigoku, which is blood red in colour!

Travel tip: Try a soft-boiled egg or custard pudding steamed by the natural hot springs.
