In keeping with tradition, Australia’s home of seafood is set to open non-stop from 5:00am on Wednesday, 23 December, through to 5:00pm on Thursday, 24 December.
The marathon will be a little different to those hosted in previous years, with a series of COVID-safe measures in place. These will help ensure customers can safely purchase and enjoy high quality, fresh Australian seafood.
Eager shoppers participating in the marathon will be required to enter the site from a single point on Bank Street. This will allow for management of registration (via QR code), temperature testing, as well as socially distanced queuing (each visitor/group to be 1.5m apart). Visitors will also need to follow the instructions of staff and NSW Police, and observe social distancing at all times when moving about the venue, including when inside their chosen retailer/s.
Previously, Sydney Fish Market has hosted more than 100,000 visitors during the 36-Hour Seafood Marathon and has sold up to 370 tonnes of seafood. While numbers are expected to be steady this year, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead by allowing extra time for shopping, avoiding a visit during peak times and limiting the number of people travelling in their group.
Sydney Fish Market CEO, Greg Dyer, said, “The 36-Hour Seafood Marathon is typically our most popular event but, as we come to the end of a year like no other, it is set to be a different experience for our shoppers this 23rd and 24th of December.”
“While we want to make sure that everyone gets their Christmas seafood supplies, it is also incredibly important to us that we are able to do this within a COVID safe environment. We’ve been planning for this event for many months now to ensure this is the case, however we ask our customers to bring their patience as well as their Christmas cheer while the Sydney Fish Market team and NSW Police look to get shoppers in and out safely, promptly, and of course, with plenty of fresh seafood in tow,” added Mr Dyer.
“Shoppers can also rest assured that their seafood favourites are in ample supply. Our experienced retailers are prepared for the high demand for popular favourites like prawns and oysters, and are always striving to ensure customers receive the best price.”
To minimise potential wait times, a number of retailers will also be offering online pre-order and home delivery services in the lead up to and during the marathon, giving shoppers peace of mind and time back during the busy festive season.
Those who plan to visit during the marathon are encouraged to keep an eye on Sydney Fish Market’s social media accounts and website, which will be updated regularly with important information regarding parking and wait times.
