It has been celebrated for the last 600 years making it one of the most important dates on Cusco’s calendar.
Held on the winter solstice every year to honour the sun god and pray for his return taking place at the Sacsayhuamán archaeological site, it is a sight visitor’s fly across the world to see.
The festival is colourful and magical and includes dancing, singing, cultural re-enactments and lavish feasts.
Celebrations run for a week in lead up to the event where there are folk dances, street fairs and live concerts to attend.
