Fairmont Royal York Announces Grand Transformation in Anticipation of 90th Anniversary

This year, Fairmont Royal York, one of Canada's most cherished landmarks, will celebrate its 90th anniversary. Since 1929, the hotel has welcomed millions of travellers from around the globe, lit up the silver screen as the most filmed location in Toronto and played host to the city's most unforgettable moments including the G20 Summit, Bill Clinton's 60th birthday and the Queen's Jubilee. Now, the world-famous hotel will mark its next historic chapter with a majestic transformation, honouring the icon's timeless grandeur while elevating it into a new era of luxury.
In the final and most exciting phase of a multi-year renovation, the highly-anticipated reveal will include transformed arrival and check-in experience, newly imagined dining venues, contemporary event and meeting spaces, and a completely redefined Fairmont Gold, presenting the finest luxury hotel offerings and services in the city. Bringing the vision of the hotel's transformation to life has been carefully entrusted to a team of world-renowned architects and design partners with extensive experience modernizing some of the most iconic and treasured properties around the world. The team shares a commitment to the preservation of the historical and architectural elements of the landmark property, once the tallest building in the British Empire. The grand renovation will be completed summer 2019, in time for the hotel's official anniversary celebration.
“Fairmont Royal York has always been a defining feature of the Toronto skyline and we are excited to announce the next stage in its time-honoured history,” said Edwin Frizzell, regional vice president and general manager, Fairmont Royal York. “As we celebrate 90 years of outstanding service, incredible people and history-making moments, it is with great pride that we prepare to unveil the most significant transformation this building has ever seen. A grand scale renovation that both modernizes the property and stays true to our past, this project is a reflection of our storied history and a look into our exciting future. We are certain that the changes planned for the hotel will capture Toronto's bold new energy and we look forward to debuting our extraordinary transformation over the course of 2019.”
LOBBY & ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE
Led by global design firm Rockwell Group, the concept behind the lobby and arrival experience is inspired by a journey from Toronto's past through its present. The design embraces and preserves the building's grand character and heritage, while creating a contemporary, modern escape that feels timeless. Given the hotel's connection to the railway and Toronto's Union Station, material, form and detail cues were inspired by the aesthetics of train cars and railroads. Rockwell Group created what will be a true 'living room' for the city, with a larger, more generous reception area lined with marble stairs and a sweeping ramp that guides guests to check-in stations inspired by train ticketing counters.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
At the heart of the hotel's metamorphosis will be an elevated food and beverage experience, as Fairmont Royal York prepares to debut four new signature dining concepts. Responsible for redefining the iconic hotel's cuisine is renowned Fairmont executive chef, jW Foster. Chef jW brings to the hotel a wealth of knowledge and expertise from more than 15 years' as a seasoned chef at Fairmont properties around the globe. He plans to honour the brand's commitment to sustainable food by implementing a new program that works closely with Ontario farmers to provide authentically local ingredients in each new menu.
“Over the next few months, we cannot wait to unveil the exceptional cuisine and share the vision behind what will be among the city's hottest culinary destinations,”said jW Foster, executive chef, Fairmont Royal York. “Guests can expect a bold, modern and authentic essence in the new menus, capturing the next level of dining in Toronto while still honouring the hotel's rich food history and renowned service.”
