Come along and immerse yourself in a weekend of all things seafood. From Abalone to Sea Urchins, Prawns to Oysters and everything in between the WILD HARVEST SEAFOOD FESTIVAL 12th – 14th APRIL 2019 caters for everyone and promises to show off the very best of what Mallacoota and the surrounding areas have to offer.
The three-day festival is being run by the Mallacoota community and funded by the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund and Victorian Fisheries Authority. It includes free and ticketed events, such as the launch of Freddy and Heidi Ledwell's new book “Head Down, Bum Up”, chronicling the beginning of an industry, wild harvest seafood market with guest appearance from renowned Melbourne chef Alejandro Saravia of Pastuso, Saturday sippers and Seafood, Outdoor cinema, fishing clinic, tour of the local Abalone processing factory AFCOL, Indigenous foods talk and workshop with Noel Butler and Mallacoota lake boat tour with Indigenous host. Not surprisingly, the centrepiece of the festival will be seafood.
East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Natalie O'Connell said Mallacoota has been known for its superb fresh, wild caught seafood that is sought-after both nationally and abroad.
“The Wild Harvest Seafood Festival will take that to a whole new level, as locals, Gippslanders and foodies from further afield will not want to miss out on the combination of great locally-sourced and prepared seafood in one of the most idyllic settings,” Cr O'Connell said. “With the history of the seafood industry and indigenous culture as underlying themes during the weekend, this inaugural event will really showcase Mallacoota's wild caught produce, scenery, industry and community.
“The Wild Harvest Seafood Festival will be a celebration of the rich and diverse seafood that is available in and around Mallacoota,” East Gippsland Marketing Inc Marketing Manager Hayley Hardy said. “We are also looking forward to honouring the indigenous heritage of the area as well as the abalone diving.”
The Wild Harvest Seafood Festival kicks off at 5pm on Friday with a book launch on the history of abalone diving, titled “Head Down, Bum-Up” by Mallacoota locals Freddy and Heidi Ledwell at the Mallacoota Golf Club. Free entry.
Saturday morning visitors to the region will be able to visit the Wild Harvest Seafood Market with guest appearance by Melbourne–based chef Alejandro Saravia of Pastuso; join Noel Butler, an Indigenous Budawang Elder, for a workshop on eel trap and spear-making; or perhaps join a boat trip aboard the Loch Ard to explore the culturally significant sites within the Mallacoota Inlet with an indigenous host.
Saturday evening bring a picnic rug and settle in for Saturday Sippers, Seafood and Outdoor Cinema. This is a family friendly event. Skippy and the Intruders will be shown on the big screen – originally filmed in 1968, the only Skippy movie and filmed in and around Mallacoota.
On Sunday morning, bring the fishing rod and join in one of the fishing clinics hosted by the Victorian Fishing Authority, wander down to the AFCOL and tour the facility, or perhaps listen and join in on a cultural walk on indigenous foods with Noel Butler - a Budawang Elder from the NSW South Coast.
Bring or hire a SUP or surfboard and ride the waves with Surf Shack Surf School, enjoy a great coffee with a Japanese twist at Origami Coffee, explore the coastal rainforests and wild, rugged beaches of Croajingolong National Park or see the region by boat by jumping aboard the M.V.Loch Ard. The Loch Ard was first built in Melbourne as a passenger ferry in the early 1900's from Tasmanian Huon Pine and Kauri and now cruises the Mallacoota inlet, exploring the flora, fauna and scenery.
The Wild Harvest Seafood Festival is sponsored by the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund, East Gippsland Shire Council, and Victorian Fisheries Authority. The event is hosted by East Gippsland Marketing Inc and the East Gippsland Food Cluster.
