Chinese New Year's Eve Countdown in Melbourne

Chinese New Year's Eve dinner is the most important family gathering of the year. Whilst very much a reunion at home, many families go out to have celebratory gatherings in Chinese restaurants.

The sounds of fire crackers and the waft of gunpowder fill the air on New Year's Eve in Melbourne's Chinatown as the lions drive away the evil spirits to bring in a prosperous and peaceful new year.

From 10.30pm, gather around the corner of Little Bourke and Russell Street where Chinatown's countdown to the New Year begins. A DJ will set the scene accompanied by street performers.

The clock will countdown to midnight and will culminate in a lion dance to bring in the Lunar New Year of the Goat.
