Chinese New Year Festival in Sydney is one of the most popular events in the city’s calendar; attracting more than 600,000 visitors each year.
The Festival celebrates Sydney’s rich Asian cultures, bringing over 80 events to the streets of the city. As an Associate Partner of CNY15 Sydney, and in its second year of sponsorship, China Southern will be helping to bring the Festival Launch, Twilight Parade, and Dragon Boat Races to life.
The Festival will officially launch on the February 13; Dawes Point will welcome ninety illuminated Terracotta warriors, and two warrior horses to light up Hickson road Reserve until February 22.
The Twilight Parade down George Street will take place on February 22 and run from Town Hall to Darling Harbour with lanterns, floats and projections lighting up city streets and buildings in celebration of the much loved Sheep.
Dragon Boat racing has had a special place in Chinese culture for more than 2000 years, and today represents patriotism and integrity.
On March 1 the biggest dragon boat race regatta in the Southern Hemisphere takes place at Darling Harbour.
Spectators can watch from the 90-metre viewing pontoon as the 12-metre long boats each with a carved dragon head and tail, battle it out.
Melbourne will celebrate with Lunar New Year throughout January and February with a variety of arts and culture events across the city.
China Southern is supporting Chinese New Year in Melbourne for the first time; helping to illuminate the 100-metre long Docklands Dragon, which will be on display at Harbour Esplanade from February 19 through March 1.
China Southern Regional Marketing Head for Australia & New Zealand, Amolaya Rattanathasaniya said she was delighted that China Southern has been able to support the airline’s native festival and celebrate some of China’s long held traditions alongside the City of Sydney.
“It’s a great privilege to be involved in Sydney’s and Melbourne’s Chinese New Year Festivals, and such a varied and expressive exchange of cultures.
“We view our partnerships with City of Sydney and Destination Melbourne an extension of the services we provide to Australians; connecting them to China’s popular destinations, such as Guangzhou,” finished Ms Rattanathasaniya.
