CHINESE TOURISTS CHOOSE SYDNEY AT CTRIP AWARDS

Sydney has been ranked as ‘The World’s Best Holiday Destination’ by China’s leading online travel group, CTrip, at the 2014 Best Tourist Destinations Awards, Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase announced this week.

Sydney was also ranked in the top 10 best luxury tourist destinations and best family fun destinations. The results were generated on the basis of more than 50 million user comments, as well as online votes by over 3.6 million Chinese travellers.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said it was a great result for Sydney and the local visitor economy.

“This international recognition is a testament to all of those who work in the tourism industry, from hotel owners to restaurant operators to retailers,” Ms Chipchase said.

“The awards recognise the fact Sydney has something for everyone, appearing in the list recognising luxury tourism as well as the list recognising family fun.”

Sydney was the dominant Australian city at the awards, with Cairns and Melbourne only receiving one mention each.

Ms Chipchase said: “China is the number one inbound market for NSW and it is important that we continue to promote our State in this important area. In the year ending September 2014, more than 443,000 Chinese visitors stayed 12.1 million nights in NSW and spent over $1.5 billion during their stay.

“Sydney is the gateway to NSW for international visitors, and we are planning to gain an even larger share of the inbound Chinese visitor market, and further cement our State’s position as the number one tourism destination in Australia,” she said.
