Tigerair Australia has teamed up with Mackay Airport, Mackay Regional Council and Mackay Tourism to launch an integrated promotional campaign to help lure Melbournians to the understated jewel in Queensland's crown – Mackay.
Leveraging the '101 Things To Do in the Mackay Region' campaign which launched earlier this year to help turn outdated perceptions of the Mackay Region around, a range of marketing initiatives commence from this weekend focused on appealing directly to the leisure market in Victoria.
A special episode dedicated to highlighting some of the tourism drawcards of Mackay will air in Victoria on Coxy's Big Break travel show this Sunday 22 February 2015 at 5:30pm on Channel 7. TV show host “Coxy” flies from Melbourne to Mackay direct with Tigerair and uncovers a sample of the many hidden gems of the region; including a platypus diving experience, Keswick Island, the rain- forest ziplining experience, jet boating, cable wake boarding and more. As always, at the end of the show will be a special 'Mates Rates' offer for viewers to snap up an exclusive travel deal.
A dedicated landing page promoting the Mackay Region as a leisure destination will be linked from the Tigerair website later this month and a social media campaign will encourage people to send in their own favourite things to do in Mackay to be in to win travel prizes to the region. Tigerair's inflight magazine Tiger Tales has a feature article on Mackay and the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival in the March/April edition and direct marketing will also be used to encourage people to visit Mackay.
Mackay Airport GM, Rob Porter welcomes Tigerair's support to promote the hidden gems waiting for visitors to Mackay to enjoy.
“Tigerair is a key airline partner for Mackay Airport. Many locals appreciate their direct service to Melbourne and now Tigerair is helping share with people in Victoria the secret of why we love to live here so much. This is an excellent example of collaboration between the region and an airline partner.
“A big thanks to Quest on Gordon & Quest Apartments for their support in Coxy's Big Break production.”
Council's Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said this was an example of how all stakeholders partnering to promote the Mackay region could have an outstanding outcome.
"Coxy's Big Break is one of the highest rating travel shows in regional Victoria and is the perfect vehicle for our push into attracting the southern market to explore the natural tropical assets of our region,'' Cr Martin said.
“The marketing efforts in Melbourne will really complement the #MackayPride campaign launched by council recently,'' he said.
"The southern perception of Mackay as a mining town needs to be changed and the focus turned on the reality of our amazing 28 beaches, tropical rainforest and wonderful climate.
"If you are standing in the cold and rain in Melbourne in July and a tropical beach is less than $100 and under three hours way direct, well, I know where I would be booking a weekend away to ease the winter blues.”
Mackay Tourism Marketing Officer, Sarah Matheson, said this is an exciting partnership and thanked Mackay Airport, Mackay Regional Council and Tigerair Australia for their support.
“With the launch of the new 'The Mackay Region. Nature. Reserved.' brand in late 2014, this is yet another way we can increase awareness of the unspoilt, natural attractions of our destination. We will continue to work with our key stakeholders to drive key messages about the region and look forward to working closely on more tourism projects in the future.”
Tigerair Australia Commercial Director Adam Rowe says Tigerair continues to work closely with tourism and airport partners in Mackay to stimulate travel to the region.
“Coxy is the perfect ambassador to help showcase our direct flights and the highlights of the Mackay Region to Victorians. He's a well-respected Victorian personality and he tells it how it is. Coxy really enjoyed Mackay and we're sure more Victorians will too, particularly with winter months not too far away.
“The Mackay Region has many undiscovered leisure drawcards and our consistently great value fares unlock the door for Australians wanting to see more of their own backyard for less, or to visit somewhere new.
“Our Mackay services are popular for travellers heading to the Whitsundays region and for visiting friends and family. However it's also a fantastic leisure destination in its own right and has moved on from its mining town image of the past. Our great value airfares stimulate air travel in Australia and we're keen to introduce more people to Mackay.”
Tigerair flies regularly between Melbourne and Mackay four times weekly and offers the only direct air link between the two destinations. To celebrate the launch of the integrated Mackay marketing campaign, from this weekend, Tigerair is offering special airfares from just $65* each way.
As always the key to securing the best value fares with Tigerair is to plan ahead and book early – as demand increases closer into the travel date, so does the price of the fare generally.
