CHINESE CULTURE ON SHOW

Hundreds of Chinese performers bringing acrobatics, magic, martial arts, music and dance will visit Sydney this Chinese New Year.

Traditional Chinese puppetry, dancing and music will be on offer in two separate shows as part of the Chinese New Year Festival by the City of Sydney.

The Chinese New Year Gala Night will feature a Sichuan puppet show with traditional northern style dancing by the Xi’an International University Art Troupe. With a total of 752 undergraduate performers, the art troupe features nine performances – from folk dancers and hip hop performers to a chorus and instrument group.

Featuring dance, drums and opera the performers will tell a story titled Age Impression of The Silk Road—Chang’an Dancing. The Silk Road is an historically important international trade route between China and the Mediterranean including Central Asia, West Asia, Southeast Asia, and even stretching to Europe, Africa and America.

Meanwhile the acclaimed Hunan Folk Orchestra from China will make its debut in Australia performing the Chinese New Year’s Concert at City Recital Hall. The concert will feature well-known Chinese music.

The Chinese New Year Gala Night is on at Sydney Town Hall on 23 February. The Hunan Folk Orchestra will perform on 20 February at City Recital Hall.
