Kibali |
This is the next generation in the zoo’s international conservation breeding program for Western Lowland Gorillas.
This includes new French-born male, Kibali and females, Mbeli, 10, and Johari, 13, have been busy exploring their refurbished Gorilla Forest exhibit.
Kibali arrived at Taronga in early 2012 after a global search for a suitable male by Zoo staff. Primate Superviser, Louise Grossfeldt, said: “We wanted a mother-raised gorilla that had the some of the same remarkable qualities to lead our gorilla group as Kibabu, Taronga’s former silverback who was famous for his calm style and even temperament.”
With as few as 100,000 left in the wild, Kibali’s selection will introduce valuable new genetics into Taronga’s breeding group.
New zoo dining choices these holidays: Zoo visitors can also choose from three new dining options, including the bistro-styled ‘The View’ overlooking Sydney Harbour, the newly re-styled Taronga Food Market and the popular Piazza inspired by Pilu at Taronga’s historic Main Entrance.
The Taronga Food Market is scheduled to re-open on 9 December with Mexican and Asian street-style food as well as Lavazza coffee, salads, sandwiches and baguettes.
