Hanoi welcomed its 2.5 millionth international visitor on Friday, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
Japanese national Mori Hajimenal was presented with flowers, gifts and an insignia at a ceremony held in Hanoi on the same day and attended by leaders from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the National Administration of Tourism and the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Mori said the achievement was all the more significant in view of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Japan this year.
Data from the Culture, Sports and Tourism Department show Hanoi received more than 4.6 million visitors in the third quarter of 2013, up 11.2 percent over the same period last year.
The figure includes more than 731,000 foreign travellers, an increase of 15 percent year-on-year.
