Chinatown |
Everyone sees the main landmarks of New York on their first visit to this fabulous city, even if that visit was for a short weekend and the landmarks were part of a quick round the City tour by bus.
Many of those places are worth a second and even third visit but this article intends to broaden the horizon a little to provide a few more ideas about what to see and do.
CHINATOWN
There is a unique atmosphere in a Chinatown district in many cities of the World and New York’s Chinatown is certainly no exception. Whether you simply want to soak up that atmosphere or your aims are shopping or eating, you will find Chinatown an unforgettable experience.
BROOKLYN BRIDGE
It is difficult to get a real image of Manhattan from within its streets. Why not take a walk over Brooklyn Bridge, have an ice cream at the Factory on the Fulton Ferry Landing and catch your photograph from there.
These gardens in the Bronx are special covering 250 acres. If it is Wednesday admission is free but it’s only $6 on other days. A camera really is a must today. Brooklyn incidentally has a similar but smaller garden well worth thinking about if you are in the District.
BRONX ZOO
New York’s Zoo in the Bronx is one of the best zoos in the World. It is also the largest metropolitan zoo in the World covering 265 acres with Bronx Park on land that was sold to THE City by Fordham University on condition that it was used as a zoo. The species are numerous, the environment most realistic.
CONEY ISLAND AQUARIUM
Continuing on the nature theme, the Aquarium on Coney Island is very interesting and particularly so if you are visiting New York as a family; there are plans for a new shark section in the next couple of years though there’s no danger from the “Great White” portrayed in the 1970s film “Jaws.” That was a few miles north of New York! Seriously there are a host of fish, mammals, turtles etc to keep the family entertained and the Aquarium is open every day of the year.
THE YANKEES
Baseball is as much a mystery to many as cricket is to the Americans but sport is an experience in itself, never mind the actual game, it is a family outing lasting longer than the game itself. Yankee Stadium is well worth a visit to watch the legendary New York Yankees.
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
Madison Square Garden has hosted so much over the years including many of the classic heavyweight boxing bouts. It was the venue for World Heavyweight Boxing and all the legendary fighters have fought there. It is now a stadium for all kinds of events, other sports and concerts and being centrally placed in Manhattan it is an easy venue to find.
USS Intrepid, the American aircraft carrier had an illustrious history before its decommissioning. It now houses a museum on the Hudson River side of Manhattan and once again its central position makes it easily accessible for anyone staying in the Borough. It has been there for 30 years and now includes Concord and the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Don’t forget to bring the kids!
These are just a few more ideas for you to think about on your next visit to New York!
