Events in Tasmania Make an Ideal Short Break this Autumn and Winter

Tasmania is rolling out a calendar of food, wine and musical events to warm the soul over the cooler months. Premium epicurean events including Tastings at the Top and Savour Tasmania are set to lure discerning gourmands to the island, while the popular Chocolate Winterfest is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. The Red Wine Weekend and Dark Side of the Brew Festival will delight wine and beer enthusiasts with hand-crafted and award-winning tipples, while the Festival of Voices and Devonport Jazz Festival will charm music and arts lovers alike.

SAVOUR TASMANIA - 23 MAY TO 2 JUNE
Savour Tasmania
Savour Tasmania is set to ignite the imagination once again with amazing displays of culinary creativity over two weeks in May in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. This year, the festival will host 'A Feast of Chefs' (Hobart, 26 May); a food fiesta celebrating Tasmanian produce and the culinary prowess of over 64 Australian and international chefs. Canapés on arrival, a Catalan inspired entrée by Frank Camorra, freshly shucked Tasmanian oysters, mouthwatering Tasmanian cheeses, 16 different global cuisines to sample, and local wines and beer from 30 winemakers and micro-brewers are just some of the event highlights. Tickets for the event are $95 and include a welcome drink and food.

Savour Tasmania will also be hosting dinners by Ash Mair at the award-winning Stillwater restaurant in Launceston (1 June), and Bay Views restaurant in Burnie (8 and 9 June). Originally from Launceston, Mair is currently based in the UK, and is known for his modern food inspired by traditional methods and Spanish and Japanese flavours and techniques. A recent winner of UK MasterChef: The Professionals 2011, Mair will also be hosting a Masterclass demonstration at the Launceston Harvest Market on Saturday 2 June.  Tickets for the dinner at Stillwater are $150, and$160 for the dinners in Burnie.

RED WINE WEEKEND - 26 TO 27 MAY 2012
Red Wine Weekend
This warming winter event brings together over 70 of Tasmania's best winemakers in Hobart's newly renovated Princes Wharf 1 venue - set right on Hobart's picturesque waterfront. A new partner of Savour Tasmania, the Red Wine Weekend is a place where guests can meet and mingle with vignerons and winemakers, taste the state's outstanding Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Sparkling Reds and Rosés, and partake in Masterclasses.

TASTINGS AT THE TOP - 23 to 25 JUNE 2012
Cradle Mountain
This cosy winter epicurean extravaganza takes place at Cradle Mountain Lodge, in Tasmania's spectacular Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park. Here, food-lovers congregate for a three-day festival - rated amongst the country's best food and wine experiences, featuring degustation dinners, cooking demonstrations, fresh produce markets and wine and cheese tastings. The event will be jointly hosted by Peter Bourne ("The Wine Man") and Nick Haddow, owner and artisan cheese maker at Bruny Island Cheese Co., who both share an intimate knowledge of Tasmanian produce. The Tastings at the Top package includes three nights' accommodation at Cradle Mountain Lodge; a hearty full lodge breakfast each morning; selected lunches; dinners; matched wines; entry to all Tastings at the Top events; and sampling of a wide variety of local gourmet produce at the Marketplace.

THEATRE OF THE WORLD EXHIBITION AT MONA - 23 JUNE 2012 TO 8 APRIL 2013
Theatre of the World
MONA's latest exhibition, entitled Theatre of the World, brings together over 300 works, many never seen before, from MONA and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG). Curated by Jean-Hubert Martin with Tijs Visser, Oliver Varenne, Nicole Durling and the MONA and TMAG teams, Theatre of the World brings together an array of beautiful and intriguing works and objects of curiosity, with the highlight being 80 barkcloths from across the Southern Pacific.

FESTIVAL OF VOICES - 6 TO 15 JULY 2012
Festival of Voices
Festival of Voices is Tasmania's premier winter festival, celebrating the vocalist and the power of song. Now in its 8th year, the Festival stages events for more than 10,000 singers and audience members, and showcases an increasingly wide range of interpretation of the voice, including choir and ensemble singing, spoken word, cabaret, debate, poetry, storytelling and hip-hop. Due to its rising popularity, the 2012 Festival will now be held over ten days and will include a range of innovative new events along with old favourites such as FireSong, the ever-popular bonfire and big-sing which for the first time will open the Festival.

DARK SIDE OF THE BREW - 8 JULY 2012
The Dark Side of the Brew
The Dark Side of the Brew is part of the delicious Latrobe Chocolate Winterfest event, and is returning after a warm reception at its debut in 2011. The event celebrates the best of Tasmania's microbreweries, who have joined together to offer tastings of their best dark beers, whiskies and ciders. This year, visitors can take part in chocolate matching sessions and beer education workshops, and meet the dedicated makers behind the mouth-watering, locally-brewed beverages. The Dark Side of the Brew is the first event of its kind in Australia, and is set to attract devoted dark brew fans from around the nation.
