This film was shot in Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon), and a bridge was erected for the purpose of shooting the film over Kelani River at Kitulgala, Sri Lanka.

The Mount Lavinia Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was featured in "The Bridge on the River Kwai," 

The hotel was used as a military hospital during World War II, so it was a fitting location for the film. The hotel's history dates back to 1805, when it was built as the residence of Sir Thomas Maitland, the second governor of British Ceylon.
