Australia’s best buskers set to go head-to-head on Boulevard of Dreams

Buskers looking to claim their patch of pavement in Australia’s country music capital, can now get their registrations in, with the 2023 Toyota Country Music Busking Championships now open.

More than 200 buskers from across the country are expected to go head-to-head on Tamworth’s Peel Street at the 51st Toyota Country Music Festival, which gets underway on January 13.

Toyota Country Music Festival Manager Barry Harley says there’s always significant interest from buskers for the Tamworth festival.

“These championships are one of the most iconic parts of the Festival, and they do a fantastic job in showcasing the variety of musical styles and talent from the Festival’s main precinct,” said Mr Harley.

“Already we have buskers for the 2023 Festival ready and raring to go, with a number of keen performers already submitting their registrations,” said Mr Harley.

Some of the nation’s biggest country stars, like Keith Urban, Troy Cassar-Daley, Beccy Cole and Kasey Chambers, all got their start on the Boulevard of Dreams. And buskers at the 2023 Toyota Country Music Festival will be hoping to impress the judges and claim a spot on the big stage in the grand final.

Toyota Australia Chief Marketing Officer Vin Naidoo said the Toyota Busking Championships is a great opportunity for emerging talent to showcase their music to festival goers.

“The Toyota Busking Championships is one of the most anticipated competitions in the festival and each year it unearths talented musicians, providing a springboard for the country music stars of the future.” Mr Naidoo said.

“We’re proud to be supporting such talented artists and we look forward to a vast array of performances next year by buskers from across the country.”

Brisbane’s Jacob Vincent was crowned the 2022 Toyota Busking Champion at the 50th Toyota Country Music Festival in April.

As part of his prize he will be coming back in 2023 to perform several gigs, including Opening Concert and with busking supporter The Court House Hotel.

“There is no better way to immerse yourself in the Tamworth Country Music Festival than busking on Peel Street. It’s a privilege to share music on a grassroots stage, surrounded by a community of fans and artists, so excited to support and celebrate country music,” Jacob said.

“I can’t wait to be back in 2023, sharing songs and making memories on Peel Street.”

The top ten buskers, as chosen by the judges, will be invited to perform at the 2023 Best of the Buskers concert on Sunday, January 22 in Toyota Park.

They’ll also have the chance to win a share in over $5,000 worth of prizes, plus the opportunity for paid gigs the following year in 2024.

It is FREE to busk at the Toyota Country Music Festival. Busking registrations can be made here.
