Today marks the first day of summer, and following the year that’s been there is no better time to relax and reset by exploring all that Australia has to offer.

Whether it’s relaxing by the pool, or getting up at dawn to hike along the shores, there’s something for everyone to discover this summer. So, if you’re starting to map out your summer getaway, or looking for an unforgettable experience this summer, let these beautiful photos from Tourism Australia inspire your planning.

Tourism Australia is encouraging travellers to Holiday Here This Year, with a focus on getting travellers to try out local tourism experiences along the way to ensure tourism communities receive the boost they need to bounce back. Here is your ultimate wanderlust travel guide to reclaim your summer:

For the explorers
For those looking for a scenic walk, check out the Bay of Fires in Tasmania. From October to May, you can walk along the beaches, explore coves and see wildlife on the 33-kilometre (20 mile) four day guided Bay of Fires Lodge Walk with Tasmanian Walking Company. Or try the Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk along Great Ocean Road in Victoria for stunning views and a glimpse at the big and beautiful natural limestone rock formations. Set among palm and tropical woodlands, take a dip in the Elsey National Park Bitter Springs in Northern Territory, or if it’s hiking and biking you’re after, Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains is the place to be this summer.

Something for the wildlife lovers
Visit Eyre Peninsula in South Australia to go swimming with sea lions or dolphins like no where in Australia. It is a place of extreme natural beauty, with a multitude of landscapes and outdoor adventures on offer. Or for a unique and magical experience, witness hundreds of tiny turtles hatching in Mon Repos Conservation Park Queensland between January and March.

Those wanting to escape the city
Refreshingly off the radar, Capella Lodge is Lord Howe Island’s premium luxury retreat and certainly one to the bucket list for those after some relaxation. For more island vibes, explore the many tropical islands of the Whitsundays, with an abundance of opportunity to walk on the whitest sand beaches or encounters with wildlife. Or explore the Glass House Mountains and Maleny in Queensland's Sunshine Coast; a series of ancient volcanoes dating back to 27 million years ago that are open for climbing, bushwalking or picnicking. The Glass House Mountains offer easy access to many of the Sunshine Coast's major attractions, including Noosa and it’s Noosa Eat & Drink Festival: A Summer Celebration from 4 - 6 December.

Looking to relax by the pool
Head to the recently refurbished InterContinental Hayman Island in Queensland for one of the most luxurious, but eco-friendly hotel experiences. Or if the city is more your vibe, the Emporium Hotel South Bank in Brisbane boasts exquisite style for a rooftop infinity pool with spectacular views of the city. And after a long awaited opening, the Flynn (part of the Crystal Brook Hotel Collection) has opened its doors in Cairns, just in time for summer with two extraordinary glass pools with views of the Coral Sea.

Something for families

Six and a half hours drive east of Perth, you’ll find a beautiful small fishing community Bremer Bay where in summer you can watch the orcas as they come to feast and frolic. For a family adventure suitable for everyone, look no further than the Giant Tree Top Walk in Australia’s South West. Offering spectacular views over densely forested hills, walkers will be treated to a bird’s eye view of some of the biggest timber giants on Earth. And in Melbourne’s CBD, you’ll find the world’s first immersive interactive Cluedo game in the historical Old Melbourne Gaol. Add this one to your itinerary for an immersive adventure puzzle game for all ages.

For foodies after a culinary experience
For an authentic, Aboriginal experience, try some bush tucker with Nitmiluk Tours in Nitmiluk National Park where you’ll learn about ancient cultures and stories of the Jawoyn people. Andrew McConnell's Supernormal restaurant on Flinders Lane in Melbourne serves up delicious modern pan-Asian cuisine; a must try for food loving travellers. And for seafood lovers, there is no better place on earth to try and oyster than straight out of the ocean in Coffin Bay, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Coffin Bay is a hugely popular holiday destination, and it’s a haven for ocean-lovers.

If you’re looking for an event
In January, for one weekend in Launceston and one weekend in Hobart, Mona Museum will host summer festival Mona Foma, full of music and art featuring great Tasmanian artists, unusual venues, and incredible creativity. And sport lovers can catch a match of Cricket with the inaugural, highly anticipated summer Border Gavaskar series, kicking off on 17 December.
