Van Gogh Alive Opens in Sydney

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. His paintings are scattered in many art galleries, museums and private collections around the world. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 travel restrictions, it is not possible to go and view any of them at the moment.

However, it is possible for people in Sydney and New South Wales to enjoy his art works at a special multi-media exhibition which has just opened in Sydney.

In just over a decade, Van Gogh created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. However, he only sold one of his artworks while he was alive. His fame came later, with one of his paintings selling in 1990 for $82.5 million.

Van Gogh Alive is a truely immersive way to experience many of Van Gogh's famous art works. More than 6,000 images are projected in high definition on 40 super-large screens that fill the walls and floor of the Exhibition Hall. Some of the screens show the full art work, while some show zoomed in close-ups. Others have components of the art works come alive and move about the projections. The viewing experience is enhanced by the accompanying digital surround-sound music that fills the viewing space.

I attended the Exhibit last week and felt I was walking into his paintings as I was surrounded on all sides by them. There is also a recreation of Van Gogh's bedroom he painted several times, and a display of several of his reproduced masterpieces. A bistro provides refreshments, and features several dining spaces for 2 people themed on Van Gogh's paintings.

The Van Gogh Alive Exhibition is on until 8 November at the Royal Hall of industries in Moore Park Sydney. Entry to the Exhibition is on the hour. Visitors are asked to wear face masks and come early to allow for temperature checks.
