Cairns & GBR praised for industry collaboration

Australian business events leaders have identified the high level of industry collaboration in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef as a strong motivator for holding events in the region.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Director of Business and Tourism Events Rosie Douglas said the feedback came from an exclusive new business leaders’ event held in conjunction with the Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef Regional Showcase 2015.

“TTNQ CEO Alex de Waal hosted a lunch at Sydney’s Quay Restaurant for 18 key industry business leaders to share feedback on our destination with the Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef team and our Showcase partners,” she said.

“The three areas of focus were perceptions of the region, the competitive forces the region is facing and improvements the region should focus on.

“The willingness of the industry, including competitors, to work together to sell the destination was applauded by the group who were appreciative of the opportunity to provide feedback.

“We have taken on board the perception that Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is a leisure destination and will ramp up communications focusing on the region’s business event attributes including our world-class infrastructure and experienced professional support.

“Cairns is big enough to host a G20 meeting, yet small enough to have a street closed or a light pole removed with one phone call. These are the messages that need to be reinforced to our trade partners.”

The Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef Regional Showcase 2015 was held in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne on 21-24 July.

The Business Events team was joined by 17 TTNQ members and met with 131 trade and media participants at workshops across the three cities to discuss opportunities for upcoming events.

The Showcase theme was ‘Discover tropical treasures for your next event’.

Delegates in each of the cities were given a treasure map with members’ names and were invited to go and meet with each partner on their map in order to ‘discover tropical treasures’, with the aim of educating guests on lesser-known facts about Cairns & Great Barrier Reef.
