Melbourne Airport today welcomed Air China’s announcement to commence direct Melbourne-Beijing services from June 2015.
Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said the new service will provide a valuable link for the increasing business and holiday travel demand to the important region.
“China is our number one long-haul market and in 2014 alone, passengers between Australia and China grew by 20 per cent, so we are excited that Air China will commence the first non-stop service to Beijing from Melbourne,” said Mr Woodruff
“The new service means travellers will no longer have to travel through Shanghai, providing more choice and more convenience. It also provides Victorians with access to Air China’s extensive network of more than 100 destinations within China and more than 50 other global destinations.”
“I also congratulate the Australian Government for settling the landmark air service agreements with China that have made this new service possible. The new air services agreement will allow capacity between Australia and China to almost triple as well as open further opportunities for our tourism, education and business industries,” said Mr Woodruff.
The A330-200 Air China direct service will operate four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday commencing 1 June 2015.
Air China’s Melbourne-Beijing flight will increase to a daily service from 25 October 2015, providing 28 business class seats and 199 economy class seats.
