Australian Surfing Awards: Surf's Up for the Bext Two Years

The NSW Government has secured the Australian Surfing Awards for another two years.

“The Australian Surfing Awards will be a highlight of the Australian Open of Surfing, officially returning to Manly Beach next year as part of the NSW major events calendar,” NSW Treasurer and Member for Manly, Mike Baird said.

“As the birthplace of Australian surfing, Manly is the ideal venue to host such a dynamic event, which is set to attract local and interstate visitors – providing a boost to our local economy.”

First convened in 1985, by the Australian Surfriders Association (now Surfing Australia), the 2014 Australian Surfing Awards will take place on 13 February, during the week of the Australian Open of Surfing. Also incorporating the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame, the 2014 Australian Surfing Awards will be held at the International School of Management in Manly.

The Awards recognise outstanding contributions to the development of surfing in Australia across a range of categories, including Male Surfer of the Year, Female Surfer of the Year, Rising Star, Waterman of the Year, Club of the Year, Surf Movie of the Year and Surf Photo of the Year.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is proud to support the Australian Surfing Awards.

“The Awards are an integral part of the Australian Open of Surfing, which in its first year attracted crowds of more than 166,000 people to Manly Beach, delivering an economic impact of close to $1.5 million.”

Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said: “Destination NSW is pleased to support the Australian Surfing Awards, a key event during the 2014 Australian Open of Surfing.

“I urge all visitors to the event to also take the time to explore Manly’s world-famous beaches and iconic attractions.”
