Christmas in Sydney 2013

A Sydney Christmas is like no other in the world and this year the City of Sydney is putting on the festive season with a twist, as Sydney is set to be transformed into the ultimate summer Christmas playground.

A five-week season of celebrations, promotions and interactive installations, will offer a complete sensory experience for everyone.

The streets will be illuminated with lights and decorations and for the first time the City of Sydney will be installing a host of high-tech wonders in key city spots this Christmas to help spread the festive spirit interactively. These include a new interactive Christmas tree in Martin Place, an “Infinite Choir” in the form of a new light and sound installation triggered by the movement of shoppers in Pitt Street Mall and digital projections on Sydney Town Hall and in Sydney Square.

‘Selfie stands’ the size of bus stop advertising signs will be set up in key retail hubs, allowing passers-by to snap themselves with a festive screen backdrop and a silly hat. Visitors to Sydney are encouraged to take the family on the Bright Walk, a self-guided tour through the city taking in the Christmas lights and attractions along the way, starting in Hyde Park, moving through Pitt Street Mall, down to Martin Place, up George Street to Town Hall and finishing in Darling Harbour.

For the first time, the City of Sydney has created a Sydney Christmas pocket guide to the festive season with the over 80 events listed across the key categories of attractions, concerts, carols, food and drink, decorations, shopping, families and more. The guide will be distributed by roving entertainers and choirs starting Thursday 21 Nov, and will be available at City of Sydney customer service desks, SHFA kiosks and through participating retailers.

Surprising shopping experiences are to be had at every turn, from pop-up stores featuring hand-crafted treasure to texting Santa Claus for a holiday snap while someone else does the gift wrapping. On Saturday 7 December, Westfield will lead the charge with Super Saturday, offering promotions, gift wrapping and entertainment.

Most other retailers including David Jones, Myer, and stores within the QVB, Strand Arcade and The Galeries will be making special offers. Local retailers will also join in the festive fun in the lead up to Christmas, offering some great in-store promotions and events. These include shops and boutiques in Paddington (Thursday 5 December), Surry Hills (Saturday 7 December), Darlinghurst (Thursday 12 December), and Potts Point (Sunday 15 December).

The City of Sydney will continue to produce the much-loved free family-friendly concerts in Martin Place, Hyde Park and the villages of Rushcutters Bay, Rosebery, Alexandria and Surry Hills, sure to be a hit with the kids and with plenty of opportunities for photos with Santa.
