WTTC is encouraging businesses and organisations committed to the principles of ‘Tourism for Tomorrow’ to apply before the deadline to ensure their efforts are recognised. To inspire potential applicants and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards WTTC has launched new animated film explaining the application and judging process from the applicant’s point of view. Aimed at the smaller business initiatives which might not have the WTTC on their radar to date, this short film is expected to encourage SMEs dedicated to sustainable tourism to enter the competition.
The Awards recognise the very best in sustainable tourism worldwide and in their tenth year under WTTC stewardship, the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, have been changed to reflect the broadening scope of WTTC’s sustainability agenda. There are now six award categories, with the addition of two entirely new awards to recognize the areas of human resources and innovation. The six categories are:
- Business Award
- Community Award
- Destination Award
- Environment Award
- Innovation Award (new award)
- People Award (new award)
The expanded Awards for 2014 will result in a greater number of businesses being recognised as being the very best in sustainable tourism without the Awards losing the rigorous judging process for which the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are renowned. Particularly, there will be no change to the judging process which has made the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards the gold-standard of sustainable tourism awards: an Independent Chairman of Judges, a rigorous three-step judging process involving up to 22 independent expert judges from all around the world, and on-site evaluations of all award finalists.
Potential applicants are also encouraged to watch interview with past winners now available online. The first one presents with Sally King from Jurassic Coast, Dorset, UK and Marilu Hernandez from Hacienda Mundo Maya, Mexico, both winners from 2005 who discuss the biggest challenges to delivering sustainable tourism on the ground and the impact winning a Tourism for Tomorrow Award had on their projects.
