The South Coast’s Green Cape Lighthouse and Station at Ben Boyd National
Park, has been listed on the State Heritage Register. The lighthouse
and station have played an important role in the history of the South
Coast, in particular, lighting the route at Disaster Bay to divert the
important shipping trade from the treacherous hazards of the coast which
had been renowned as a ship’s graveyard.
The State Heritage Register listing will ensure that Green Cape Maritime
Precinct - including the lighthouse, light station, ship wreck,
cemetery and remnants at Bittangabee Bay - are protected under the
Heritage Act and that any major works to these sites would be subject to
decision by the Heritage Council.
