Caloundra Queensland Wins Tidy Towns Awards 2012 in Australia

It is always a pleasure to live or visit at town that is neat and tidy. Australia has for many years encouraged towns to improve their appeared by entering the annual Tidy Towns Award competition. This year the Queensland town of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast has been won the Overall Winner Award of the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Tidy Towns Awards 2012. As well as winning the overall Australian title, Caloundra won the Community Action & Partnerships and the 'Dame Phyllis Frost' Litter Prevention category awards.

The announcement was made at the national awards ceremony and Vice Regal Reception hosted by the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO at her Yarralumla residence in Canberra.

Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, CEO, Steve Cooper was delighted with the award news. "Caloundra is the southern gateway for welcoming visitors to the Sunshine Coast and this award deservedly reflects the vibrancy and community spirit of Caloundra. Caloundra is the perfect clean and safe holiday destination that visitors are seeking,"

According to the Australian Tidy Towns Judge, Dick Olesinski, Caloundra is a dynamic and environmentally aware community with friendly, enthusiastic and dedicated residents that care for their unique environment.

"Volunteers play an enormous role in ensuring the town achieves positive social, environmental and economic outcomes. The many anti-litter, historical and environmental groups work in partnership with the Caloundra Tidy Towns group across a range of projects and are well supported by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council," Olesinski added.

The CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, Mr Rick Burnett, described the Caloundra win as an outstanding achievement for the Sunshine Coast and for Queensland. "It is a great win for the local people who have a commitment and pride about their local environment and work really hard to keep it clean, tidy and sustainable. I really hope this is an inspiration to other Queensland towns to follow Caloundra's brilliant example and get into the Tidy Towns spirit of caring."

Through the Australian Tidy Towns Awards, Keep Australia Beautiful is able to recognise local community and individual efforts that are helping rural and regional communities to become environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. ‘
