Mr. Perrin has led efforts to publicize the importance of the ocean and environment through his films. He produced Microcosmos (1996), a documentary film which records the life of insects in incredibly minute detail, for which he was named best producer at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2001, he directed Winged Migration (Le Peuple Migrateur), a documentary film showcasing the immense journeys routinely made by birds during their migrations. Oceans, his nature documentary released in 2010, was named documentary of the year at the 36th Annual Cesar Awards in Paris.
During his appointment ceremony, Mr. Perrin said, "Oceans, which take up more than two thirds of the earth, are spaces of new challenge and hope for human beings," adding, "I will do my best to promote Expo 2012 Yeosu and its ocean theme throughout Europe."
