A Top Spot - The Surf Leisure Resort

Last weekend my wife and I traveled down to Wollongong to attend the opening Night of the Wollongong University Faculty of Creative Arts Graduating Students Art Exhibition. Our daughter Emma had 7 of her art works on display. Once again we chose to stay at the Surf Leisure Resort Wollongong, where we have stayed on previous occasions over the past 4 years when we have visited Emma. We have found it to be comfortable, luxurious, affordable and conveniently located.

The Surf Leisure Resort is handy to the University, the Central Wollongong Mall and shops, and to nearby supermarkets. It is right on a beach, and a short stroll along the sand to 2 patrolled beaches. Most of our short visits to Wollongong have been in the cooler months, but we still have enjoyed walking along the beach and dipping or toes in the water. Our children have even tried catching the perfect wave when they have been attempting to master the skills of surf board riding.

For our visit we chose a motel room, as we found them to be more than adequate for our purposes. The Surf Leisure Resort actually has a wide choice of 9 styles of tastefully decorated accommodation available, all having TV, DVD, and Austar channels. DVDS are available for hire from the Resort Shop. The accommodation types to choose from are:
- Open Plan Motel Style Budget Unit
- Open Plan Motel Style Standard Unit
- Open Plan Motel Style Air Conditioned Unit
- 1 Bedroom Standard Unit
- 1 Bedroom Air Conditioned Unit
- 2 Air Conditioned Bedroom Unit
- 1 Bedroom Fully Air Conditioned Terrace Apartment
- 2 Bedroom Bungalow
- The top of the range is the 2 Bedroom Terrace Apartment which sleeps up to 6 Adults. There are 2 king singles or one king double in both bedrooms with a queen sofa bed in lounge room. There is a Dining Room, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, washing machine and dryer, 2 toilets, 1 bathroom, LCD TV in each bedroom and Plasma in the lounge room, DVD player and sound system. At the rear is a private patio with BBQ. All linen is supplied, as is in all the other types of accommodation options.

On one visit in the future we must splurge and book the Terrace Apartment – it sounds great to relax in with all the mod cons.

There is a fantastic choice of on-site indoor and outdoor activities at the Surf Leisure Resort. At various times we have enjoyed chasing golf balls around the mini-golf course and dashed around the tennis courts trying to return the yellow ball back over the net. After all the energetic activity our favourite spot was the large 25m indoor heated pool. We saw others swimming laps, but we preferred just to laze around in the warm water. Next it was off to one of the 2 heated spa pools and steam room. I’m not sure if they were invigorating or relaxing, but they were very enjoyable!

If our children were younger they would have enjoyed playing on the playground equipment. Bicycles can be hired at the Resort, as Wollongong’s main 26km bike track runs along side it.

The good thing about the Surf Leisure Resort is that it is on a large 30 acre tract of land, so the many accommodation units are well spaced out with large grassed areas between them. The internal roads are wide with good parking right in front of each of the accommodation units. There are outdoor BBQ’s, tables and seating scattered throughout the resort for use.

Many churches, clubs, societies and business choose to have camps, retreats and conferences at the Surf Leisure Resort. There are 4 large professionally equipped conference rooms.

Channel 7's Sydney Weekender TV program recently visited the Surf Leisure Resort for a few days to experience what the Resort has to offer. The story will air early December on Sydney Weekender.
