Journey Through Culture: Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Buda:dji Aboriginal Development Association Celebrate National Award

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, in collaboration with the Djabugay’s Buda:dji Aboriginal Development Association, has been honoured with the Interpretation Australia National Excellence Award for First Nations Interpretation. Their award-winning project, The World’s Oldest Rainforest Story, offers visitors an immersive experience that blends nature, culture, and storytelling in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

A Cultural Journey Above the Rainforest

Riding the iconic Skyrail Cableway, guests are transported over lush rainforest while connecting with the stories and knowledge of the Djabuganydji People. The Skyrail Audio Guide App, integrated into each gondola, delivers GPS-based narratives in five languages, allowing visitors to experience the rainforest through the eyes of its traditional custodians. This innovation ensures that every tree, river, and valley is not just seen, but understood in the context of thousands of years of First Nations heritage.

Collaboration with the Djabugay People

This project is celebrated for its authentic partnership. The Djabugay community led the storytelling, ensuring cultural integrity, while Skyrail provided the technological platform. Language preservation was a key focus, as Djabugay is classified by UNESCO as an endangered Aboriginal language. Place names, narratives, and traditional knowledge are seamlessly woven into the experience, highlighting the significance of cultural revitalisation through modern technology.

Recognition and Impact

The National Excellence Award acknowledges both innovation and cultural impact. Skyrail General Manager Richard Berman-Hardman emphasised the project’s importance, noting that guest feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “Though we conceived the project and helped provide the platform, Djabugay people led the dance – they were in control of the narrative from start to finish,” he said. The collaboration demonstrates how ecotourism can support cultural preservation while offering an unforgettable visitor experience.

A Must-Visit Experience in Far North Queensland

For travellers seeking a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural depth, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a destination not to be missed. Visitors can witness the grandeur of the World Heritage-listed rainforest, hear traditional Djabugay stories, and gain an understanding of the rich heritage of the region—all while gliding above one of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.
