Down the Rabbit Hole This Summer: Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Takes Over Sydney

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
Sydney’s summer holiday calendar is about to get delightfully topsy-turvy as Broad Encounters and The Grand Electric, in partnership with Fever, present Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. From 3 to 25 January 2026, families and theatre lovers are invited to tumble headfirst into a wildly imaginative world where circus meets comedy meets Wonderland.

Staged at The Grand Electric in Surry Hills, this immersive circus-cabaret spectacle promises an hour of high-energy fun, laughter and visual mischief for the young and the young-at-heart.

Where Circus, Comedy and Wonderland Collide

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is a cheeky, chaotic family-friendly production that blends world-class circus skills with playful storytelling and bold audience interaction. Inspired by the acclaimed 2017–2018 production Funatorium: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, which delighted audiences at the Sydney Opera House, QPAC and Auckland Live, this brand-new 2026 incarnation arrives with fresh energy, new cast members and an even bigger appetite for Wonderland mayhem.

Expect acrobatics, antics and absurdity as teacups tumble, sugar cubes fly and the fourth wall is gleefully dismantled. This is not a show where audiences sit quietly. Laughter, gasps and participation are all part of the experience.

A Full-Tilt Celebration of Imagination

Directed by Mike Finch, former Artistic Director of Circus Oz, the production reimagines Lewis Carroll’s iconic characters through a distinctly contemporary lens. Circus, comedy and chaos collide in a joyful celebration of imagination and creative disorder, appealing equally to children discovering Wonderland for the first time and adults who appreciate sharp wit and theatrical flair.

The result is a performance that balances silliness with skill, delivering moments of surprise, humour and heart that linger long after the final curtain call.

A Cast of Unforgettable Characters

A dynamic ensemble of Australia’s leading circus and theatre artists brings Wonderland vividly to life. Audiences will meet Tamara Campbell as the Mad Hatter, Daniel Gorski as the March Hare, Casey Douglas as the Caterpillar, Marianna Joslin as the Cheshire Cat, Mozes as the Red Kween, Alicia Rose Quinn as the Flamingo and Tim Dennis as the White Rabbit.

With costume and set design by Melanie Liertz, the production bursts with colour, texture and visual playfulness, transforming The Grand Electric into a richly detailed Wonderland filled with surprises at every turn.

The Grand Electric’s Little Sparks Program

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is the inaugural production in The Grand Electric’s Little Sparks program, a new initiative designed to ignite creativity and imagination in children and their families. Set within the venue’s intimate cabaret-style surrounds, the experience feels immersive, playful and perfectly scaled for family audiences.

Adding to the fun, guests can enjoy a unique topsy-turvy high-tea service, complete with sweet treats, mocktails for younger guests and cocktails for grown-ups, making it an ideal summer holiday outing in Sydney.
