The Hari Hong Kong Earns EarthCheck Silver Status, Setting a New Benchmark for Sustainable Luxury

The Hari Hong Kong
The Hari Hong Kong has reinforced its position as one of Asia’s most environmentally responsible hotels after achieving the prestigious EarthCheck Silver status. Located in the heart of Wan Chai, the award-winning hotel now ranks among the world’s leading eco-conscious travel and tourism operators, reflecting its deep commitment to sustainability, efficiency and responsible hospitality.

This internationally recognised certification highlights The Hari Hong Kong’s measurable success in reducing environmental impact while delivering a refined luxury experience for modern travellers.

What EarthCheck Silver Status Means for Global Travel

EarthCheck is the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for the travel and tourism industry. To achieve and maintain Silver Certified status, hotels must undergo independent annual audits and meet rigorous performance standards across energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, greenhouse gas emissions and social responsibility.

The Hari Hong Kong’s certification places it within an elite global group of hotels that demonstrate best-practice sustainability tailored to their location and operational scale.

Outstanding Water and Energy Efficiency Performance

During the audited year of 2024, The Hari Hong Kong recorded potable water consumption of 204.2 litres per guest night. This figure is just over half the regional average of 361 litres per guest night and significantly below EarthCheck’s regional leader benchmark of 253 litres, indicating exemplary performance for the region.

Energy efficiency results were equally impressive. The hotel’s energy consumption measured 101.15 megajoules per guest night, nearly half the regional average of 180.3 megajoules and well below the regional leader level of 126 megajoules. These results demonstrate how thoughtful design, advanced systems and operational discipline can substantially reduce environmental impact without compromising guest comfort.

Reducing Waste and Carbon Footprint in Urban Hospitality

Waste reduction has been another standout achievement. In 2024, The Hari Hong Kong sent just 3.37 litres of waste to landfill per guest night. This is barely a third of the regional average of 9.01 litres and almost half of the regional leader level.

Greenhouse gas emissions were recorded at 18.33 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per guest night, placing the hotel exactly at the regional leader level and well below the regional average of 25 kilograms. These figures underscore the hotel’s success in balancing urban hotel operations with climate-conscious practices.

Eliminating Single-Use Plastics and Driving Real Impact

A comprehensive ban on single-use plastics has delivered tangible results. Over the audited year, the hotel avoided the use of an estimated 109,878 plastic water bottles and 47,767 small plastic bathroom amenities bottles. This initiative significantly reduced plastic waste and reflects the hotel’s long-term approach to responsible sourcing and guest experience redesign.

Sustainable Design from the Ground Up

Since opening in December 2020, The Hari Hong Kong has embedded sustainability into its architectural and operational DNA. The hotel holds multiple certifications including LEED Silver, BEAM Plus Silver and BEEO, recognising excellence in sustainable design, construction practices and energy efficiency.

A striking green wall on the hotel’s second-floor terrace extends three storeys high, helping to cool surrounding areas while improving air quality and enhancing the urban landscape.

Community Partnerships and Innovative Circular Solutions

The hotel’s sustainability efforts extend beyond its walls. Through collaboration with Green Island Cement’s ShellCem Project, The Hari Hong Kong helps collect and upcycle oyster shells and other seashell waste into cement. This innovative circular economy initiative reduces landfill waste while supporting sustainable construction materials.

The hotel also prioritises responsible purchasing, local employment and community support, ensuring its positive impact reaches beyond environmental metrics.

General Manager Edward E. Snoeks emphasised that sustainability is a continuous journey, integrated into every aspect of the hotel’s operations, from energy and water conservation to social responsibility and community engagement.

A Leading Choice for Eco-Conscious Travellers in Hong Kong

With EarthCheck Silver status now secured, The Hari Hong Kong stands out as a leading sustainable luxury hotel in Hong Kong. For travellers seeking an environmentally responsible stay without sacrificing style, comfort or location, the hotel represents a new standard in urban hospitality.
