Southwest China’s Yunnan Province is rapidly emerging as the nation’s leading outdoor sports hub, a status reinforced at the 2025 China Outdoor Sports Industry Conference held in Dali, within the Bai Autonomous Prefecture. Hosted in Yunnan for the third consecutive year, the conference highlighted how outdoor sports are being seamlessly integrated with culture and tourism, positioning the province as a powerhouse for active and experiential travel.
According to the China Outdoor Sports Industry Development Report 2024–2025, the number of outdoor sports participants across China has surpassed 400 million. Among the country’s many destinations, Yunnan stands out as a top choice for travellers seeking adventure, wellness and nature-based experiences.
A Natural Playground with Year-Round Appeal
Yunnan’s growing popularity is driven by its extraordinary natural diversity. With an average annual temperature of around 21 degrees Celsius, the province offers outdoor activities throughout the year. Mountains, canyons, plateau lakes, forests and snow-capped peaks create an ideal setting for hiking, cycling, sailing, kayaking, skiing and camping.Over the past decade, Yunnan has invested heavily in infrastructure to support outdoor tourism. More than 10,000 kilometres of fitness and adventure trails now crisscross the province, alongside 81 premium outdoor camps, 12 ice and snow venues, and climbing routes across 181 peaks. These developments make Yunnan one of the most accessible and varied outdoor destinations in Asia.
Ethnic Heritage Adds Depth to Adventure Travel

Sporting events rooted in local traditions have also gained momentum. Cross-border marathons, cycling festivals and the renowned Shangri-La horse racing festival are drawing participants and spectators alike. These experiences allow visitors to engage with ethnic customs, festivals and daily life while participating in world-class outdoor events.
Strategic Growth Driving Sports Tourism
In 2023, Yunnan launched a three-year action plan for developing its outdoor sports industry, alongside a dedicated strategy to integrate sports with tourism. This policy framework has accelerated growth, attracting international events such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Kunming Marathon, the Colorful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival and the China Nujiang River Kayak Wild Water Open. The province now hosts more than 2,000 sports events annually, generating over 10 billion yuan in economic activity. Improved infrastructure has created convenient one-hour urban outdoor activity circles, enabling both residents and visitors to access nature and sports experiences with ease.
A Thriving Outdoor Economy with Global Ambitions
Yunnan’s sports industry has more than doubled in scale over the past three years, with average annual growth exceeding 23 percent. By the end of this year, the total value of the sports industry and related sectors is expected to surpass 100 billion yuan. This success has attracted more than 20 leading enterprises from outside the province, supported over 130 local operators, and delivered 150 premium sports tourism projects at the provincial level. In October, national authorities recognised Yunnan’s leadership by naming two of its destinations among China’s first batch of high-quality outdoor tourism sites.
Why Yunnan Matters to Active Travellers
Yunnan now offers a rare blend of natural beauty, ethnic culture, wellness tourism and high-quality outdoor infrastructure. For travellers seeking immersive, active and culturally rich experiences, the province delivers adventure without compromise. As Yunnan continues refining policies and developing new sports tourism scenarios, it is setting a benchmark for how destinations can combine outdoor recreation with sustainable tourism growth, making it one of Asia’s most exciting travel destinations for the years ahead.
