Port Authority Boosts Regional Tourism with Renewed Focus on Eden

Supporting Cruise Growth on the Sapphire Coast

The Port Authority of NSW has reaffirmed its commitment to regional tourism by extending its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bega Valley Shire Council and Eden Tourism, aimed at strengthening cruise visitation in the Bega Valley Shire. This renewed partnership is designed to enhance the passenger experience and support sustainable regional tourism growth on the Sapphire Coast.

As part of the MoU, $60,000 in funding over three years has been allocated to support the Eden Cruise Coordinator, a pivotal role that coordinates volunteers and contributes to key visitor experiences, including the Taste of Eden festival and market activations.

Enhancing Visitor Experiences in Eden

Port Authority’s renewed focus on Eden reflects a broader strategy to ensure smooth cruise operations while promoting vibrant, locally-driven tourism experiences. The Eden Cruise Coordinator will play a central role in delivering memorable experiences for visitors, helping showcase the natural beauty, culinary highlights, and cultural attractions of this picturesque coastal town.

Port Authority of NSW CEO, John McKenna, emphasized the importance of regional partnerships: “This renewed partnership with Bega Valley Shire Council reflects Port Authority’s commitment to enabling safe, sustainable, and commercially vibrant port operations in the Sapphire Coast region and across New South Wales.”

Economic Benefits for Regional Communities

Cruise visitation delivers significant economic advantages for regional areas, including job creation in hospitality, retail, and transport, and increased demand for locally sourced goods and services. Martin Bidgood, Port Authority’s General Manager of Cruise, highlighted the role of the MoU in supporting local communities: “Port Authority is proud to play a leading role in strengthening the cruise industry’s presence in regional destinations like Eden, helping them unlock new opportunities for coastal communities.”

This initiative follows a similar MoU signed in June 2025 for Newcastle, which aimed to expand cruise visitation across the Hunter and Central Coast regions, demonstrating Port Authority’s commitment to sustainable regional tourism growth.

Planning Your Visit to Eden

With the renewed support of Port Authority and Bega Valley Shire Council, Eden continues to evolve as a premier regional cruise destination, offering visitors access to pristine coastal scenery, local cuisine, and unique cultural experiences. For travellers seeking a scenic and immersive coastal getaway, Eden now promises enhanced visitor services and unforgettable experiences on the Sapphire Coast.
