TAT Launches E-Guidebook Promoting Sustainable Rail Travel in Thailand

In a move that highlights Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), has launched the #MyRailJourney E-Guidebook. This innovative digital guide is designed to promote sustainable rail travel, offering a unique way to explore Thailand's cultural and natural wonders while reducing environmental impact.

A Green Approach to Travel

The initiative was unveiled with flagship routes such as Bangkok–Phetchaburi and Hua Hin–Prachuap Khiri Khan, two of Thailand’s most scenic and culturally rich regions. The #MyRailJourney E-Guidebook aligns with a broader global movement toward more environmentally responsible travel options. The guide is tailored specifically for Generation Sustainability (Gen S), a new generation of travelers who prioritize eco-friendly experiences and seek ways to minimize their carbon footprint.

Eurblarp Sriphiromya, Director of the Promotional Material Production Division at TAT, emphasized the environmental benefits of rail travel, which emits significantly less carbon compared to other modes of transport like cars and airplanes. “For over 120 years, train journeys have played an integral role in Thailand’s tourism story, offering not just convenience but authentic, immersive experiences. With #MyRailJourney, we want to inspire Gen S to rediscover Thailand in a way that is both enriching and eco-friendly,” said Sriphiromya.

The E-Guidebook: A Tool for Personalized, Slow Travel

The #MyRailJourney E-Guidebook equips travelers with all the tools needed to plan customized journeys, from train schedules to local attractions, encouraging a ‘Slow Travel’ approach. By taking the train, travelers are encouraged to slow down, savoring the beauty of Thailand’s countryside, culture, and communities while supporting sustainable tourism practices. The guide also highlights local gems at each stop, ensuring a meaningful travel experience that connects visitors to the heart of each destination.

Collaborations with Global Brands

The launch of the E-Guidebook is also supported by strategic partnerships with global brands such as Netflix and Airbnb, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

Ruben Hattari, Public Policy Director for Netflix in Southeast Asia, spoke about Netflix’s involvement in curating content that complements travelers’ journeys. “Through Netflix, we aim to enhance the travel experience by offering travelers movies, series, and documentaries that bring Thailand’s vibrant culture and landscapes to life. We hope to inspire tourists to explore Thailand in new and exciting ways,” Hattari explained.

Mich Goh, Director of Public Policy for Asia Pacific at Airbnb, echoed this sentiment, noting that Airbnb’s mission aligns perfectly with sustainable travel. “Airbnb’s focus on fostering meaningful connections through local hosting allows travelers to engage more deeply with the destinations they visit. The #MyRailJourney guide will help travelers uncover hidden gems across Thailand, benefitting both local hosts and visitors,” Goh shared.

KTC’s Commitment to Responsible Tourism

A key partner in the initiative, KTC (Krungthai Card), is also championing green travel options. Pattheera Anandchotiphatchara, Head of KTC World Travel Service, emphasized KTC's dedication to promoting sustainable tourism. “We are excited to support this initiative by offering green travel products, including train tickets, electric vehicle rentals, and community-based travel packages. KTC members can also earn rewards for choosing eco-friendly travel options, making it easier for travelers to embrace sustainable tourism,” said Anandchotiphatchara.

Celebrating Rail Travel Through Photography and Culinary Experiences

As part of the #MyRailJourney launch event, attendees will enjoy a photo exhibition capturing the essence of rail travel. Renowned documentary photographer Chatree Saleewong will showcase stunning images that highlight the timeless beauty of rail journeys, telling stories of people, landscapes, and moments seen from a train window. Additionally, food photographer Kidsadakon Sukmool will offer a unique perspective, illustrating how rail travel brings together culture, nature, and community at each stop.

To further enrich the experience, Chef Belle Pimtip Paosila, from MasterChef Thailand, will present a special culinary experience inspired by the flavors of train journeys, giving guests a taste of local dishes connected to each rail route.

A Step Towards Sustainable Tourism

The #MyRailJourney E-Guidebook is more than just a travel tool; it’s part of a larger effort to promote sustainable tourism in Thailand. By encouraging slow travel, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering deeper connections between travelers and local communities, the guide plays a key role in shaping the future of tourism in Thailand.
