Cuenca Spanish capital of Gastronomy

Cuenca, in the Castilla-La Mancha region, has been named Spanish capital of Gastronomy. 

This annual award goes to the city or community which is ‘most committed to promoting its gastronomy and as such is an attractive tourist destination’. 

Cuenca’s cuisine embraces morteruelo (a form of paté), mango gazpacho and Manchego cheese. 

The city has launched Cuenca deliciosa (delicious Cuenca) which will showcase its culinary offering and involving visitors in a programme of events. 

The historic walled town of Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 

Throughout 2023, various fairs and events will take place in Cuenca, with part of the proceeds donated to vulnerable groups in the city. 

Built by the Moors in a defensive position at the heart of the Caliphate of Cordoba, it is an unusually well-preserved medieval fortified city. 

Conquered by the Castilians in the 12th century, it became a royal town and bishopric endowed with important buildings. 

These include Spain's first Gothic cathedral, and the casas colgadas(hanging houses), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river.
