Experience the Edo tradition of cooling hot thermal waters with paddle and song!

Kusatsu Onsen

Kusatsu Onsen is known for its extremely hot thermal water that emerges from the source at over 60 degrees Celsius—a temperature too hot to bathe in.

Instead of adding cool water and diminishing its therapeutic effects, Kusatsu's spring waters are cooled using the technique of yumomi, which is the act of stirring, beating, and splashing the water with a long, 180cm wooden paddle.

The stirring of the water makes the water feel soft on the skin while serving as a great pre-bathing exercise.

You can watch the whole performance through the "Yumomi and Dance Show," which has been performed since the 1960s.
