The Sukhothai Bangkok |
In the middle of bustling Bangkok is the luxurious Sukhothai Bangkok. It is located up a short driveway off busy South Sathorn Road in acres of attractive gardens and colourful lotus ponds. It is a peaceful quiet oasis in the heart of Bangkok.
Opened in 1991, it was designed by the renowned Kerry Hill and Edward Tuttle who pay homage to Thailand's ancient first capital, Sukhothai, in its design. Thai elements and textures of grey stone, metal, Thai silk, water and dark wood are used in the crisp white pavilions and low rise accommodation blocks. The public areas and guest rooms all are delightful to spend time relaxing in appreciating the stylish traditional and modern Thai decor that is both elegant and timeless.
The key feature The Sukhothai Bangkok is the hospitality that I and other guests experienced there. The staff go out of there way to be welcoming and friendly. They are very knowledgeable and professional in the duties they perform, but take time to talk to each guest to make them feel at home. This is evident in all the staff that I met - the receptionists, door people, concierge, cleaners and catering staff. They all paid attention to the finest of details to make my stay a most pleasurable experience.
Executive Suite living area |
I was interested to find out that the word Sukhothai means “dawn of happiness” in Sanskrit. I had a sense of experiencing real happiness during my three-night stay at The Sukhothai Bangkok.
The Sukhothai Bangkok is a sanctuary of soothing calm and subtle luxury to retreat to at the end of a day's activities exploring busy Bangkok. Large gardens and lawns, lily ponds, and jacaranda trees surround the guestrooms, dining and recreational buildings making it a wonderful hotel to relax in and enjoy.
The Sukhothai Bangkok's restful green gardens and quite water areas can be seen from the 210 guestrooms. These come in various styles, including Superior Rooms, Executive Suites, Deluxe Suites, and Deluxe Studios.
I enjoyed my non-smoking luxury Executive Suite with and all that it provided in its large 76 square metres of floor space. My suite was just like living in a mansion it was so huge.

Executive Suite Bedroom |
I appreciated the welcome selection of Thai dessert sweets and the fruit that was provided in my suite each day.
It was very easy to relax in the suite during the day and each night. I enjoyed the restful views through the windows down over the courtyard filled with gardens and ponds full of lotus flowers.
My suite looked gorgeous with its decor of wooden floors, teakwood furnishing and Thai silks. It had a large entry foyer and a separate living area from the bedroom area. There was a large 20-channel satellite 40-inch LED TV that could be swivelled around on a pedestal so that it could be viewed from either the bed or the sofas. There was a refrigerator, minibar, and Nespresso coffee machine.
Executive Suite Bathroom |
I had wonderful nights sleep on the very comfortable king-sized bed. I just used the selection of pillows on the bed, but a pillow menu was available in case I desired other styles of pillows. I appreciated the nightly turndown service and the blackout curtains that made the suite nice and dark at night. A welcome addition was the iPod dock.
The separate spacious marbled bathroom and dressing area had a deep soaking bathtub, separate shower room with a rainfall showerhead, toilet and two vanity basins. There was plenty of room to move about.
The air conditioning made my suite nice and cool to relax in after being out in the heat of the day. The daily housekeeping kept my suite in a very clean state each day and a pleasure to relax in.
The Sukhothai Bangkok |
I enjoyed my daily breakfast buffet in the Colonnade Room with its extensive choices of Asian and Western dishes. I particularly enjoyed the fresh juice and omelettes that was made for me on request. The food was of high quality and the service was excellent.
The 8 dining options at The Sukhothai Bangkok offer award-winning gourmet fine dining. The Celadon is an authentic Thai restaurant and La Scala is an Italian style restaurant serving classic and progressive Italian cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed my main and dessert at La Scala when I dined there one evening. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I was unable to enjoy the Sunday brunch and its signature chocolate buffet.
Outdoor swimming pool |
For relaxation, the Spa Botanica at The Sukhothai Bangkok offers a relaxing menu of massage and facials. The large outdoor swimming pool is a cool spot to relax. The pool attendants and bar staff offer personalised service while relaxing on the pool lounge chairs under the shade umbrellas.
For those on business, a dedicated business centre is available to use. Several meeting and conference venues are available.
The Sukhothai Bangkok is a 10-minute walk from Lumphini MRT Subway Station. It is in the middle of the embassy precinct and is close to Bangkok's business districts, the Chao Phraya River and shopping malls.
