Secrets of dinosaur survival on show in new cutting-edge exhibition

The latest discoveries from recent fossil finds are revealed in a new dinosaur exhibition, Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival at the Museum of Tropical Queensland.

Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival explores the predatory prehistoric world of dinosaurs with animatronics, 3D models and fossil casts that visitors can touch, and exhibits with close-to-life-sized murals of all the protagonist species, fully fleshed, feathered and restored in living and breathing colours.

Acting CEO of the Queensland Museum Network Dr Jim Thompson said Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival breaks the mould on the traditional way of thinking about dinosaurs.

“Not long ago, what was known about dinosaurs was based almost totally on assumptions made from studying their internal body structures. The rest, including colours and skin coverings, was left to the imagination,” Dr Thompson said.

“Now, thanks to incredible research and technology, we are able to get a glimpse of the true, bizarre and complex nature of the evolution of the Dinosauria.”

Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival provided the opportunity for the North Queensland community and visitors to the region to better understand the science of dinosaur evolution through the lens of today’s cutting-edge technology.

“Last year’s Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous broke visitation records for the Museum of Tropical Queensland, attracting more than 98,000 people, and I’m sure this fantastic new exhibition will also capture people’s imaginations,” Ms Enoch said.

“Engagement in science is strong in Townsville, both in its role in unlocking the mysteries of yesterday and finding solutions to the challenges we face in modern society today, as seen by the popularity of World Science Festival Brisbane programming, with almost 2000 people attending this year.”

Following two separate paths of dinosaur evolution, Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival the exhibition draws these two timelines together in a massive and dramatic battle that in evolutionary terms, could really only be won by flying away.

The exhibition will unveil the history behind the spikes, quills and feathers of the dinosaurs with some species using them as insulation, and others as defensive-offensive items or simply ornamentation.

Porcupine-line runners and massive horned faces were also in-built protection systems against predators, namely the Feathery Menace – a carnivore in the shape of Tyrannosaurus that often reached gigantic proportions.

Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival is a travelling exhibition by Luis V. Rey & Gondwana Studios.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland, part of the Queensland Museum Network, is open from 9.30am - 5pm daily.
